    Posted: 16 April 2007 at 11:05am
I've just had a horrible thought - my sandwich at work most days has philly cheese spread in it. I've just realised that this could maybe be counted as a soft cheese! A bit slow on the uptake maybe, but it just never occurred to me before now.

Does anyone know? Is cream cheese spread a soft cheese in the way that brie and blue cheese are? Help!

From what I understand, cream cheese is not a soft chese like the others (its to do with how it is made, not that I know!) I ate heaps in my first tri - it was a great snack on crackers.

philly is fine and there are a few other soft cheeses that are too. I'm pretty sure that as long as it is pasturized (SP) then it is OK.

Yep, Philly is fine -- it's more to do with how it's stored and handled that makes a difference, along with pasteurisation.

My midwife used to tell me to just shut up and eat that stuff (in reasonable quantities, of course), as worrying about it was worse for the baby than actually consuming it! LOL

As long as you dont leave it sitting on the bench all day it is prob fine. I have been eating cream cheese. I think it is the soft cheeses like brie that are a problem because of the bacteria that is in them. A local cheesemonger here (who is a total expert in cheese) told me to avoid the bries and camembert but that most of the unpastuerised ones they sell would be ok! so there are lots of theories.....if you have been eating it all along and havent got sick dont worry.

I have been staying away from all soft cheeses but I guess it's up to the individual as to how far you want to take things.

I had a midwife tell me that as long as its pasturized it's fine. And as all NZ cheese has to use pasturized milk - it's fine to eat NZ cheese.

Love my blue and Brie - and have eaten it (in moderate quantities) thoughtout my pregnancy. No probs here!
