Topic: Im worried, please help Posted: 16 February 2007 at 1:47pm |
I've just done something stupid. I ate a sandwich (a homemade one from this morning) but discovered on the last bite that the bread was mouldy.
First of all, can the mould harm the baby? There are other types of food poisoning besides listeria which can be a risk, aren't there?
Also, I'm allergic to penicillin and I'm not sure whether that's going to cause more complications either.
I'm just so worried that I've done something that will hurt the baby.
I called the poisons hotline just now and they didn't think it would be a problem, but they said they normally deal with chemicals and stuff so I should phone my obstetrician. Trouble is, he's on holidays at the moment, so I've left a message at his rooms asking if whoever is covering him can call me.
I'm just not sure what to do, or even whether I need to be in as much of a panic as I am

Gosh I'm not sure sorry. My niece is allergic to penicillin and she has never reacted to a little mould on bread but I guess it's case by case. What about ringing healthline maybe they could offer some advice or a doctors surgery!!
Try not to stress too much.(stupid thing to say I know)but try.

If you're feeling ok I wouldn't worry too much. (I know that is completely easy to say but less easy to do!)
I had food poisoning in both my pregnancies and was majorly panicked for bubs but my midwife both times was really unconcerned and said as long as you're not vomiting for more than 24 hours or have diahrea (sp) for more than 2-3 days and no high fevers, just to keep your fluids up and rest as much as possible and bubs will be fine.
I hope this is helpful, just try to relax, keep an eye on your symptoms and go to your doc if anything changes.

Mikaela, big hugs I'm sure there will be nothing to worry about but I hope that your ob's cover person will get back to you soon for extra reassurance.

I wouldn't think a small amount of mould would cause food poisoning. As for the penicillin allergy - I'm pretty sure it has to be a specific type of mould for penicllin to form & you'd have to eat a hell of a lot of it to even come close to the strength that you'd normally get given. Hopefully your obstetrician back-up gets back to you soon to put your mind at ease.

sorry but im allergic to penicillin and cannot eat mould - cheese, unpeeled mushrooms etc...so to be safe i would suggest (in case you are like me) that you try and flush it through your system - i do this if i react badly to mushrooms usually...drink heaps of water...as much as you can handle safely...and you are then more likely to crap it out than start vomitting.
Must admit i had bread like this early on...well didnt eat it but was majorly p eeved cause id made some mighty sammies with it before discovering it was mouldy and had to throw it all out...
while u will probably be ok...err on the cautious side is probably best...

I had a similar freak out moment a few months ago when i ate a chicken sandwich after the chicken had been sitting in the microwave for a few hours! and my bubs is still happy and healthy also my hubby is alergic to penicillin and he has eaten many a mouldy things! (stupid young boys and their stupid dares!!!! ) and he has been fine but was given the actual drug in a rush at hospital by mistake and had a bad reaction so the food obviously wasnt enough for him to react.
Hope you feel better soon...

Hi (nutritionist here), I haven't heard of any mould or yeast being a problem with pregnancy / food poisoning. The big ones to watch for are listeria, campylobator and salmonella, so I am sure you will be fine. Best not to worry too much til you hear from your obs (I know easier said than done!)
Even if you do eat something that can contain the bad guys (and bread wouldn't), you still probably only have a 1/2000 chance of getting sick and possibly losing baby. They warn us to be cautious as it does happen, but not often.

Hope you are feeling ok! It is always a worry when you discover things like that. Just wanted to say tha DH is allergic to penicillin and has eaten mouldy stuff, plus cheese and mushrooms and never had a problem.
Bombshell - what a hassle for you to have it so bad!

Yuk! As far as I know it wouldn't normally be a problem but I'm not sure about the allergy ... sounds like you already have plenty of advice there. Calling Healthline is a pain (have to answer 20 questions before you can ask 1) so wait for the ob call (or call again). My guess is that if you're feeling well, everything's fine.

Dont worry about the mouldy bread, it shouldnt be a problem. It is an aspergillous (?sp) mould which is not a penicillin. The stomach should kill it as well. The only risk is for people who eat mouldy bread when they have very low immune systems and inhale the spores (like the elderly) as it can grow in their lungs. So dont worry about the baby.

Thanks everyone for the help. I've waited for a couple of days with baited breath for any symptoms (even though I know they'd probably show up straight away) and it seems like everything is fine.
Phew!
