Topic: Marginal Placenta Previa Posted: 16 October 2009 at 4:13pm |
I had a low-lying placenta at the 20 week scan, but the MW said 90% of these self-correct by 32 weeks, I didn't worry about it. I had my follow-up scan yesterday and it looks like I'm one of the 10% that it hasn't.
Currently its borderline as to whether I'll need a c-section, and at the least its put an end to plans of a home birth and even a hospital waterbirth. I'll probably have to labour with an IV lure in, because I'm high risk for a haemorrhage.
I've got another follow up scan at 35 weeks in the hope that its moved up further.
I'm hoping some of you will have happy stories to share. Have any of you had placenta that moved up after 32 weeks? And if so, how far did they move? Mine is currently 2.4cm from cervix, which is pretty much where it was at 20 weeks.
Has anyone attempted a vaginal birth with marginal placenta previa, and how did it go?
After not worrying about it at all since the 20 week scan, I'm a bit rattled to learn its still a problem

Mine was still low at 32 weeks, but moved out of the way at 36 weeks.

T-Rex - I also have low lying placenta and trying not to worry bout it too much but the thought of C-Sec is always at the back of my mind which is worrying as I'm hoping for a water birth. I will be having my follow up scan in mid dec. Fingers crossed yours decides to move by next scan! Good luck!

A friend of mine had placenta previa at her 20 week scan, it was still showing at 30-something weeks as marginal coz she was gutted to find out that it was 5mm too low for her to try for a VBAC. Anyway, at 36 weeks a scan showed it had moved sufficiently and she had her little boy by VBAC on the gremlins birthday (14 Oct).

Oh I think I know who you are talking about Emma, yeah for her getting her VBAC (and on the gremlins bday LOL). I have been wondering and praying things went her way this time!

My midwife said that the womb changes shape at 34 weeks (approx) and so at 32 weeks your womb hasn't change shape yet so hopefully yours will move by your next scan.
I also have to have a scan but midwife is booking it for 34 weeks to make sure all is well - I have fibroids and the position of placenta they are worried it will block babies head so I too am hoping all is well.

Mine had shifted by 30 weeks but the obstetrician said they often don't shift till later and that the main reason they bother checking around the 30 week mark is because there is still enough room to see clearly. So yours may well still shift out of the way. Good luck and here's hoping all goes to plan for you.

Oh yay! Thanks for the happy stories! I'm still waiting on my referral to the specialist to get the whole story, and the midwife doesn't want to tell me too much because she says ultimately it comes down to the specialist's call and she doesn't want to guess what they'll say when mine is so borderline. If it has to be a c-section then of course I'll do that, but fingers crossed it keeps on moving so I don't have to!
I'm so pleased to hear that it still might

Just to update - I just had my scan and its moved up. Its now at 6.6cm from the cervix and it will definitely be ok to go for a vaginal birth
Not sure about the homebirth - will have to chat to MW, but at this point I'm just stoked to avoid the caesar
