Topic: blood pressure readings Posted: 08 September 2009 at 10:18am |
sorry probably heaps of topics on this but i need your expert opinions:)
my bp normally is 120/80 but at start of this pregnancy was 106/61 for the first two mw visits...todays one was 128/70... it was done by a 3rd years student(not sure if that makes a difference?)
with Ethan my BP steadily increased and then dropped again but by then i had pre PE ....my brother is in hospital and a few other things but my question is should i be worried? Mw just said to keep an eye on things.. everything else fine.. is there anything i can do to get it back to 'normal?' I haven't bene walking like i used to cause my leg has been hurting but it's better now..i guess walking is helpful?

Sounds similar to mine KA, with Sam it steadily increased right until the end and was always 'borderline' high. My last midwife sent me for bloods every week to be sure and everything was normal but she really made me nervous and I guess being with my ex, being overweight, having a family history of high blood pressure all contributed to it being high.
It's doing the same thing now, just being at the top end of normal so maybe it's just me, although my midwife is a lot more relaxing and I found if I was nervous or I rushed to get there it was always a wee bit higher.
I guess walking would be helpful, but I haven't done much of that
It's pretty stressful having a toddler too! I took Sam to my first midwife appointment and he was rifling through her drawers and touching things and being really naughty while she was taking my BP and it was normal although I felt like exploding!!

I don't think I even got one headache or the blurry vision or spots in front of my eyes that she kept asking me about. I don't think I really had any swelling until after I had him too! So yeah, no symptoms at all just borderline high BP!
I'm not sure about it being low to begin with, mine was pretty average/low to start with too, but could have been just the time of day or the person doing it.
Mine fluctuates depending on who does it

I got lots of headaches the week before my bp went up and blurry vision, LOL I had switched glasses and thought it was that (even tho same prescription) silly me! I didnt feel right either, not sick, just not right. Put that down to being 38 weeks pg! turns out it was PE...my swelling was within normal ranges apparently (although looking at photos I disagree I looked like I had been blown up with a bicycle pump) but my bp only went up a tad.
I am not sure what you can do about so not much help there, but mine sat at around 130/80 from about 20 weeks onward and didnt change until 38 weeks. I guess if you get any symptoms then call your mw asap.
Someone will have some info re things to do to help keep your bp down I am sure. Being calm does help though. I would get so nervous that they wouldnt hear the heartbeat that my mw checked that before anything else otherwise my bp was through the roof.
Gosh, I wasnt much help was I...

Hi KA
My MW told me that your BP can lower in the first half of pregnancy before it gradually goes back up to "normal" again. Your last BP reading is still good so I wouldn't worry about it. With Emily my BP was quite low at the start of my pregnancy 100/50. 110/60 was as high as it got and even went as low as 90/40 one reading!! Up until 28 weeks it averaged 100/50, so it was very surprising for everyone when I ended up with sudden severe PE at 30 weeks with BP of 160/105!!!
This time round my BP before pregnancy was around 110/80. First reading at 4 weeks it was 110/75, and it's gradually gotten lower to 100/60 at last reading a couple of weeks ago. So I wouldn't be surprised if next reading it went back up slightly, although I will start to worry if it got over 120/90.
But yeah definitely try not to stress too much about things or try to cram too much in your life, like I did with Emily. At 27 weeks I had my wedding, moved house at 28 weeks (which was a disaster and I ended up in tears and frustrated - long story), combined with the summer heat, existing oedema I was suffering and the stress I was under at work, it's probably not that surprising I ended up with sudden high BP and PE.
Oh and by the way the top number is not too much for concern. In pregnancy it's the lower number they worry about if it gets too high. So if the "normal" lower number for you is 80, then it'd be cause for concern if it got over say 95.

I wouldn't worry too much about 1 reading, lots of things can make it go up randomly and with your brother in hospital and you feeling a bit nervy that could have been enough to bump it up a bit and 128/70 is actually pretty good. I was always told that the first number is the one that can go up when you are rushing about/feeling flustered etc and the bottom one is the one they really worry about.
With Spencer I had a reading of 90/60 at my first appointment at 5wk pg and 140/70 at another (had rushed to get there though) my mw wasn't concerned because the bottom number was good, and because I was obviously flustered and late, and at the next appointment it was back to 110/70 which is my normal reading.
If you feel funny and get concerned you can probably get the nurse at your docs to check it quickly for you, i'm sure they won't mind if you explain you had pre eclampsia with your last pregnancy

One reading, I wouln't even worry about and it wasn't that high (well high enough for a PE alert). If you were getting your bottom number over 90 for a few readings in a row (as in every 20-30 minutes for a few hours) then I would be getting worried. As someone who had it in both pregnancies your Uric Acid levels are something that will be the big trigger to be sent away for OB testing.

Yip, its the bottom number that they are most concerned about if you are worried about PE. If it goes up by 30 then they are the most concerned so yours is still fine.
Also on a side note - you really only have a 15% chance of developing PE a second time so if thats what your concern is then that might help slightly.

trud thanks:)
yeah peanut- she said (the OB at CWH) that my chances were 4% from most studies and up to 30% from one study she read..
it was such an issue and I only ever got pre PE that i can't imagine what it's like getting full on PE...
I am over my freakout and the fact my brother is having spinal surgery (though neck surgery to fuse c1 /c2) 1st..was really making me worried I think...I'm trying to relax about it as much as I can.. he's in great hands and is doing well atm.

it worried me also cause she said to watch out for the signs(which i know by heart which i figured she wouldn't have said unless she was worried but I guess she's just covering her bases and needs to keep me informed.
heard bub's heartbeat for the first time as it kicked the doppler so that was awesome:) relaxed me a lot too

Yeah it was probably the stress, is a big worry having your brother in surgery and yep she would have been covering her bases by going over the symptoms again.
Yay for hearing the heartbeat

They have to be careful so am guessing she was erring on the side of caution.
My BP went up slightly today so my MW is sending me for weekly bloods and urine. As she said she is better to be anal than not so am guessing your MW was taking the same tack by saying to watch for the signs.
