Topic: Folic acid confusion Posted: 12 August 2009 at 9:20pm |
Hi girls, having recently switched from taking a 0.8mg folic acid tablet to the Blackmores Pregnancy multi vitamin, I'm very confused as to whether I'm getting enough folic acid or not. On the Blackmores bottle it says it has 250ug (the u is strange, though).
I thought about taking one of my usual 0.8mg tablets with it just in case, however there is a warning on the packet saying that 0.8mg is the recommended daily dose and do not exceed that.
Urgh, help!

I think 800ug is the same as the 0.8 you are talking about.
Just googled.....The u stands for microgram & the m stands for milligram. There are 1000 micrograms in a milligram.

Yep I think thats right. I was confused as well. My Dr recommended 800ug for me and I was taking Elevit which has the 800ug required

You need to take the folic acid tablet as well. There is not enough folic acid in the blackmores pregnancy vitamin (its 250/800 that you need). My MW said its fine to take both so you get 1050ug, even though 800 is all you need. You can't overdose on it.

Yeah take the 800mcg of folic acid on top of the multi. You can't overdose on folic acid so its better to get over the "recommended" amount of folic acid than get less

I would take both as well - silly really that the preg vitamin only has 250mg in it!

If you were worried about going over 800ug - buy the blackmores folic acid as well as the multi vit - take one multivit and two folic acid and you'll get a total of 850ug.

I don't think you can OD on folic acid - any extra is excreted in your urine. Better to have too much than not enough.
Congrats on your pregnancy too

Red – yeah, I'm actually pretty worried as I have been taking just the Blackmores Pregnancy multi for the last 2 weeks. I'm extremely annoyed that Blackmores has insufficient folic acid in it and also annoyed that the other folic acid tablets I was taking prior, carry a warning on the packet telling you not to exceed the daily intake of 0.8mg!
Hope2be, thanks hun!

It's stupid that they put that warning on folic acid. I'm on 5mg of folic acid, so about 6x the recommended amount.
