    Posted: 16 March 2010 at 12:27pm
Mr 4 week old is on a 3hourly routine and I change his nappy at least every 3 hours, our problem is that he is currently wetting through his whole bed at least 3 to 4 times a day.

We are currently using disposable such as huggies and treasures (ultra) in newborn size as he’s only just reached the 3kg mark (yes the nappies are correctly put on as they are always very wet too). I plan to use pocket style cloth nappies but they are way too big for him yet (my baby brand brought from trademe for 4kg-17kgs).

Does anyone have any good ideas to prevent me from having to do soooo much washing?
Are there any disposables that are more adsorbent?
Or what type of nappy covers do you recommend that don’t cost the earth?

I’m going nuts doing the laundry as I only have 3 sets of sheets

Have a look at the snazzipants website - but I would say try a bummis whisper pant over the disposable, they are pretty close to leak proof.

my boy was EXACTLY the same..............i brought a waterproof matress protector then put sheet then a waterproof pad that lies on top (you can get from farmers or briscoes) that way you only need to change the mat on top.....my boy was wearing huggies as this was the only one i found worked and then cotton nappyn on top ( the old scool type that you fold) then i only got garments that soaked it up so it drew away from him so he slept thru.

I didn't have this problem until DS was older but I use to put a cloth nappy insert inside my disposable and that seemed to stop all my wetting problems.

Just a couple of thoughts thou:
- Do you make sure his diddle is pointing down and in the middle so that he is not peeing out of nappy?
- The nappys may also be the wrong size which is causing the problems. DS2 was born weighing 6lb10oz but had no butt on him so we had to use premmie nappies for the first 3 weeks to stop leakage and I often go up a size sooner than the kgs say on the packet asthey start leaking.

Good Luck.

You could try go up a size, or make sure they are on very tight (not to tight obviously, but very secure around the legs)

if you have pockets already just put them over the top as a cover...   or if you have a knitter in the family get them to knit you up some longies...

Doh I know what a pain this can be!!!

I'd definitely go with a cover of some sort. We have the same prob with Bethany and always put a cover on her when she sleeps. We alternate between bummi whisper pants & bummi whisper wraps. (See http://www.snazzipants.co.nz/, click on 'shopping' then 'covers') and they've made a huge diff. If you're planning on using pockets and already have some, you could even try using the shell as a 'cover' of sorts over a disposable if it fits him snugly enough.

The other thing I've tried is putting a cloth booster pad in a disposable nappy. (Just have to make sure you don't throw it out afterwards lol!) Worked sometimes but not always - might be worth a shot tho?

I'd say maybe also try going up a size in disposables, in case he needs a higher rise to be leakproof.

Also, do you change him before you put him to bed, regardless of how recently he's been changed before that? Much as I hated the fact that doing that used more disposables, it definitely did make a difference for Bethany.

Hope that helps :-) All the best!

PS in my experience huggies are definitely the most absorbent out there - we've tried everything else but they hold the most and we still have to use covers when Bethany sleeps! And just as an aside, further down the track if you find that pockets don't do the trick cuz he's such a heavy wetter, I suggest trying itti bittis (bitt d'lish snap in ones) - we didn't discover them until Bethany turned 1 but they transformed our world!! (Although we still need covers on them when she sleeps too lol... the joys of a heavy wetter ;)

We had the same issue when Jake was alot older. I found huggies the most absorbant, but we used to put a fuzzi over top - so if you have some pockets I'd just use one on top for sleeps. And we always went up a size well before the weights on the pack so he may be ready for infant size.

And yep, make sure the willy is poking down!

Yes penis is pointing down lol should I really be changing him more than 2 1/2 to 3 hours? I have been putting the cloth nappy over the top too it seems to work real well but it looks so funny cause it's real big on him, o well saves the washing

Everytime Josh started wetting through his huggies he needed to go up a size (even if he was to light for the weight range) we use to put an old cloth nappy on his bed where his bum was (got given a heap to use as burp cloths) so we were only changing the old nappy he was lying on and not the whole bed. I just changed him when he needed it so only when he woke really but he was feeding 3 hourly so probably did it as often as you.

DS has just started wetting through his disposables at night too
He's already in a bigger size huggies than he wears during the day, and the problem isn't exactly that it's not absorbent enough it's that he's just become a tummy sleeper (now he moves/rolls around the cot on his own) so gravity isn't taking the wetness to the back and the pressure is on the front so it's leaking out his tummy.
I'm going to buy the next size up today but I think it'll be too big on him.
Might try the extra padding idea.

I just had an idea and thought I'd post it here to see if the other mum's thought it'd hold water, or if I'm being silly.
Huggies boys nappies have more absorbency at the front, which is what he's lying on and pee is coming out the top.
Maybe I should try him in girl huggies, then the main pad wouldn't be so far forward.
What do you think?

You could give it a go! Funny thing is, Thomas will wet thru huggies and night, but not the unisex other brands!
