Topic: 9.5month old standing - no sleep for mum Posted: 31 March 2010 at 10:00am |
9.5month old can now pull herself up, and my oh my, her best place to do this is in her cot!!!
Well, she is not sleeping at all now. Last night she fought sleep from 9.30pm to 1am, trying to stand in her cot. I did not know what to do? Reassure her, and lie her back down, stay in the room until she falls to sleep, rock her gently and soothe her to sleep, comfort nurse her....none of the above worked. Yikes.
How long till this period is over with??

I ad the same issue when DD was 8months. I would go in every 10minutes, put her down and tell her to go to sleep. It is ver difficult to do this at night time but she finally go the picture that I wasnt going to pick her up. have you tried putting something in her cot so that she can cuddle?
here is some stuff from the sleep store regarding 9month milestones that may help

That's awesome, thank you! Just had a cuppa and read the attachment, loads of advice for babies at this age going through developmental milestones.

That happened here as well, it took a couple of weeks for Kaelin to get over it. I tried teaching her to get herself down but otherwise did all the things you're doing. Felt like a very long 2 weeks but she (thank goodness) stopped doing it. Good luck!

Hugs hun, ooh I so remember this, it's such a mission when they suddenly realise they can stand up! We tried all the gentle techniques but none of them worked. So we tried the going in every 10mins thing... which also didn't work, she just got more worked up every time she saw one of us. In the end the ONLY thing that worked (once we'd tried everything else for long enough that we knew that she knew she needed to lie down to be able to sleep) was simply saying goodnight once we'd put her to bed, walking out of the room and leaving her to it. Felt horrible, especially when she kicked up a fuss for the first little while. (Sometimes for an hour or more) but she eventually got the idea.
Granted, we'd find her in some crazy positions for a while there! I always checked on her when we went to bed and moved her at least enough so I could cover her up. For the first little while I was scared she'd stir, and once or twice she did wake, but I kept doing it and even now she doesn't even stir if I have to move her when I check on her.
Oh yeah - couldn't say exactly, but it lasted a month or so with Bethany I think, cuz that's how long it took us to exhaust all options and find the one that worked :P
Hugs hun, hang in there - I promise it won't last forever!! x

We had this at 7months! Umm I for along time have left her to it, she used to go head down on her feet and try and move around. I figured out early that it was easier to let her do her crazy headstand and get it out then it was to try and force ger down

She actually doesnt want to lie back down. So with your advice, it must be perserverance? Some nights i have let her sleep with me, because i am too tired to battle through the night.
Hopefully she will start to learn that its okay to topple over in her cot, soft landing and eventually go to sleep.

yep perserverance is the key hun! you dont want her to think that she is going to get to sleep in your bed if she stands up and cries!
Start on a friday if DP doesnt work the weekends or if you have some family that can come and help so that they can do the same thing for you while you have a nights rest. you need to be in the right frame of mind to keep at it. fingers crossed for you honey that it passes soon

Both my bubs could pull up by 7months, but I used a safety sleep so they couldn't do it in bed. Jake stayed lying down the whole time he was in a cot, even when he was well over 1 and the safety sleep was gone ... and he still stays in bed and yells for us when he wakes up!! haha.
I love safety sleeps!!! (both my kids have been great sleepers by the way).

Hey Rocmummy how's it going?
Have you figured out a way to handle it yet?
Another thing I just thought of is that if you force them to lie down by picking up and putting down they don't learn that they have to lie down to sleep.
We did try doing that with DD about 3times then we would leave her to it and she would eventually plop down on her backside the better they get at it and the more control when getting up and down the more likely they are going to be able to settle themselves and lie down. Even now I walk into the bedroom to find DD turned around and upside down in her cot

Once my son started to stand up in his cot when put to bed, I started to wrap him back up! He is now 11 months old and I still wrap him from the waist down for his day sleeps. I find it works a treat as it is just enough of a deterence to stop him from standing up before drifting off to sleep but he is able to get out of it once he wakes up, so can 'play' in his cot once he wakes.
