I'm seeing my midwife today for the first time officially. She's a hospital one not an independant one.

What I'm slightly worried about is that she won't want to take me on as I'm going to be moving from Nelson to New Plymouth about six weeks before I give birth, I've heard that midwives get a bit funny about this sort of thing as some don't get paid if you don't give birth under their care.

Is this right - should I keep my move a secret from her or does the fact she's a hospital one mean she is just on salary? Should I book myself a midwife in New Plymouth too now or wait until I get there in April?

I always thought that the hospital had no choice and had to take you on.

I would be inclinded to keep it quiet just for now and then, maybe just after xmas tell her then that you have just found out that you have to move. She would then be able to help you with the changing midwives.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Ditto.. don't tell her!

I don't know how it works with hosp midwives but an independant wouldn't get any funding for you if you move. I reckon it would be easier alll round if you didn't mention that you'll be moving!

And re finding a midwife in NP, I would prob be inclined to phone a couple and see what they say... Sometimes they can get quite booked.

I think that the scenario would be different for a hospital midwife compared to an independant. Usually hospital midwives are a last resort and so they would take you no matter the circumstance. I have just recently changed midwives.....(I actually left without telling my midwife *naught naughty hehe...well thats when I moved to Oz...but 6 weeks later Im back in NZ )Independant midwives are paid in stages, where after each trimester they send in a claims form.
I think that you're midwife wouldn't mind aslong as you let her know your intentions of where you are giving birth. My initial midwife was fine when I told her that I may be returning home to give birth. Also you may want to look for midwives in NP now as they do tend to get booked up fast. I have only just been able to be squeezed in with a midwife now, and I'm 32 weeks roughly.

She was great, and it was absolutely no problem for her - she will treat me as everyone else and help me find a midwife in New Plymouth when it comes to it and keep in touch to find out how everything is. Though it would really help if you could give me the name of your cousin's midwife, it's always great to have a recommendation.
