Topic: Fluoxetine for Pms Posted: 18 August 2011 at 7:41pm |
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this? my doc has prescribed this to help with PMS as I cant take the pill due to risk of stroke since ive had a stroke while pregnant. i had hoped this would help the imbalance I have been suffering since I got my cycles back about March.
Ive never suffered from PMS before, and I dont know what else I can to do?
I dont know whether to try what the doc has prescribed as a few people have said from personal experience DONT DO IT, esp since I will only be taking for two weeks (after ovulation) per month.
So if anyone else has any hands on experience or knowledge about this or other remedies for hormone imbalance(that arent expensive)that would be helpful in my decision

I've been prescribed it to slow the flow a bit as was having super heavy period, must say I've only used it once since being prescribed but I had no pains (usually horrific) and a very light flow compared. But I was told to only take a day before due (if its regular enough) and only 2-3 days in so my experience may not help you sorry.

I used to have a good paper that gave overview of premenstrual dysphoric disorder treatment options. But doing a quick search now, do you think I can find it to post you the link?! Sorry!! Seems like there was some research that came out last year suggesting fluoxetine as useful for some PMS sufferers. (google scholar is a good place to find some of the literature on this)
People I have known who have had cyclical mood issues with cycles were typically already on an antiDepressant medication already, so I don't have any first hand knowledge of using fluoxetine in the two weeks prior to menstruation. I do, however, know that people can have some success using cognitive & behavioral strategies to help manage their moods in this time in addition to their antidepressant. So, you could always trial those sorts of things for a bit...and/or trial meds and see if you find something that helps. If I suffered PMS/PMDD as severely as some people I think I'd be inclined to try the options! It can be horrendous.
Wow...novel, sorry!

I don't know much about taking anti depressants in this situation, but I actually didn't know that you could take AD's "part-time" (i.e. 2 weeks out of 4??). As far as I was aware you are not supposed to stop taking them without dr's instructions, and personally if I forget to take my medication after 24 hours I feel quite odd - if you come off them you're supposed to wean off slowly.
I'm on AD's for depression, and I too noticed that my temper was very short. They have helped greatly with this. If you are worried I would suggest seeing another Dr for a 2nd opinion. As you are a mum you could also try get in contact with Maternal Mental Health in your area, your plunket nurse may be able to help with this!!

Completely disregard my stupid comment earlier!! I read it as a different pill i'd been prescribed, not an AD. Sorry ladies... seems I may need more coffee some mornings!

When I was on fluoxetine for depression when pregnant I was told that it can take up to 6 weeks for levels to get high enough to get the full effect. It worked great for me but would doubt that two weeks would give you a lot of relief from your symptoms. I would be interested to know how it goes tho as I get dreadful depression/PMS for a couple of days prior to AF each month

You don't have to apologize for "sounding clueless"!! Not at all....:-)
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy that focuses on thoughts/behaviors...it is problem and goal focussed. It's hard to explain in just one little sentence! Wikipedia will have a good general overview for you. Usually starts with looking for patterns in behavior/thoughts. It is an evidence based intervention for many psychological difficulties such as depression and anxiety. There is less research supporting it's use in PMS, but there is still some that suggests it can be helpful.
In the wee google I've done before posting here I've def seen more than one article (scientific not just a forum question!) where they discuss use of fluoxetine for PMS/PMDD....indication for using it is different to depression& I've def read that they prescribe for luteal phase (ie between ovulation and menstruation). So, I don't think that your gp is on the wrong track. It'll just come down to a decision of whether you feel you need something like fluoxetine to help you out during PMS.
Here is one article I had a look at. It's really quite old now (2001) but if you scroll down to the psychological models and lifestyle changes section it refers to CBT and also other diet and lifestyle things that could be helpful.

Thanks Sally. I will wing it and give it a go and see what happens. I do know that 30plus is good, but out of my current budget, so I know i have a back up plan. its a real concern that non natural stuff is so much cheaper than the natural remedies!
