Does anyone have a good website or place I can go to find out historic information about a place? We are buying a house and I want to find out more about the house and currently with the council unable to find all their files we can't check the property report. I thought there might be a place online that has old photos of streets etc or somewhere I could go to check photos out other than the obvious library....
I watched an episode of My House My Castle recently and they had a property detective giving tips on how to research a property's history. They gave a website to start with, but I can't remember it - sorry! Hopefully the episode will be on TVNZ OnDemand though.
thanks Red, QV is the problem with the property, the information they have says it was from the 1930s whereas on the despoited plan from 1959, the building footprint is showing a different building over several parcels! So I am sure the house is not that old....just that it is having implications on our insurance grrrrr, ie $10,000 excess if the house burns down waaa!
I KNEW I had watched something about a property detective and I could not for the life of me work out where I saw it so thanks Mummydee!
I used to research property history as part of my job.
If its an historic place, you can try the historic places register on the Historic Places Trust website.
I'd also get a copy of the certificate of title which might tell you if land parcels have been amalgamated, which might explain the several parcels. Your lawyers should be able to do that for you.
But I would try libraries too, some have great street photos etc.
