I've been given the go-ahead to organise a baby shower for my sister in law. Its her first baby (girl) and they're super excited! (so cute, it's making me all clucky ARGH) So anyhoo, I need some ideas on what to do for her! Mine was just a cup of tea type thing, her hubby wants to be involved in it as well hehe. Does anyone have any good websites they could direct me to? TIA! xox

im planning one to be held in november.

im thinking of making afternoon tea and doing some of these

1. name the nursery rhyme - give them a line of a nursery rhyme, riddle, song etc and name it
2. am i a mother, father or baby? - (eg I have a beard and I visit at christmas. answer is father christmas)
3. string to make the baby bump size
4. guess the sex (obviously girl), date, time, weight. and name if not already announced
5. melted choc in a nappy melt it and have them name the flavour
6. spell "Baby shower" out in bowls/bags and in each bowl put something of that letter baby related into it and blindfold them and make them guess (eg. B = bib, A = Apple (baby puree sort), B = blanket, Y = yellow rubber duckie) or use the pregnant womens name, or the baby to be's name if it has been announced.
7. drinking contest - fill baby bottles with milk (can be flavoured) and use newborn teats and race to finish the bottle
8. blindfold guests and get them to put a nappy on a dolly (or equivalent) have someone wiggle the doll around and make it hard for them. as this is what every good child will do anyway

At one baby shower we were blind folded & had to find safety pins (the small gold ones) in a bowl of raw rice - its ALOT harder than it sounds :)

Another is tasting baby food - then guess the flavour

Putting a nappy on a doll would be great for the guys to do - all the ladies would get a good chuckle

Another good one is the memory game. You have a tray of baby paraphenalia (bottle, safety pin, shampoo, booties etc), you hold each item up and name it, then the group get to look at the tray for 30 seconds before it's covered up. Then they write down as many things as they can remember.

I have put a ban on all games at my baby shower...I hate them at all of my friends baby showers. I think they are fine for those that have kids because they can see the funny side of them - but as someone who didn't have kids I found them strange and silly, and told my 2 BFF's no games.

So we have compromise on this:
- high tea theme (with wine for those that can drink).
- a baby bottle full of jellybeans - guess the amount.
- guess the date, time, size.
- guess the celebrity baby (pictures scattered around the room so people can gather the answers in their own time).

After the baby shower we are having a house warming party so all the men are then invited - but originally I was going to do a evening BBQ for all the husbands to join us. I also have a couple of single male friends who I want to involve but wouldn't be caught dead at a baby shower.

Best thing we did at my baby shower was decorate onesies. My sister bought a pile of plain white ones from the Warehouse in a variety of sizes and some fabric pens. There was certainly a variety of artistic talent! But it was something the guys could join in with too

Adding to the game suggestions - we all provided a picture of ourselves as a baby/young kid to the host of my friend's baby shower earlier this year, then we had to match names to photos.

Guess the bump size with a piece of string or ribbon.

Match the celebrity baby name with its parent(s).

We didn't do any of the "gross" games at my shower or any showers I've been to EXCEPT at my shower for DS2 when nearly all of us had kids (and I had DS1) where my best friend made ME name the baby food - not the rest of the guests - and the chocolate bar nappies That was more for everyone else's entertainment but I didn't mind it because a) it's not as bad as real poo and b) they were all close girlfriends.

I like the idea of an evening BBQ following afternoon tea for the girls so that the guys can come along too.

If you want guys to be there all along, maybe just go with the guess the DOB/weight/name/length of labour and baby photo games? So it's less "baby shower" and more catching up with mates?

It's not really an NZ "tradition" IMHO so I think anything goes!! I've been to so many different types of "baby shower" while I've lived overseas, the american girls go for a totally different type of party!

i have also banned games at my baby shower - particularly as it's not something i enjoy and a number of my friends either have teenagers now or don't have children

it's an afternoon tea theme - basically a chance to catch-up - although there seems to be alot of alcoholic drinks (my dad is being bartender as he as a little put out that he wasn't invited so for now he is the only male in a sea of estrogen!)

like the idea of something to involve the men as well - and yes american girls really do get into it and it's often very full on!

wonderful suggestions!
I wasnt planning on doing games for my sister in laws one as she's the only one out of her friends who are at baby stage! I think the hightea might be the way to go!
