Topic: Working mummy Posted: 05 February 2008 at 10:13pm |
So Im halfway through my 3rd week at work and to be honest Im loving it but.....I feel guilty because Im loving it and shouldnt I be pining for my children during the day? Dont get me wrong I do miss them but not as much as I thought I would and its really only at the end of the day when Im just about to finish work Im really ready to get out the door and race to pick them up. I get really annoyed if traffics bad cos Im desperate to see them by then but during the day Im sweet. Do you think this makes me a bad mummy?
oh and I think part of it is that so far they have been great at preschool. They havent once said they dont want to go and there are never any tears and when I pick them up they are happy and playing and race to give me big cuddles. If I thought they were unhappy it might be a different story.

No it doesn't make you a bad mummy at all.
I sometimes have to pry Andrew away form Preschool when I pick him up.

If you are a bad mummy then I am a bad mummy!!
I felt really guilty when I first went back to work becuase I felt that I had failed as a stay at home mum (we had orginally had the dream that I would be at home until our child/ren were school age). So I struggled with that aspect first of all and it was made worse by the fact that deep down I loved being back at work!!! (yeah yeah yeah in spite of my b*tching about idiot customers). The first week was hard but more in the sense that I felt that I had failed...not in the sense that I wanted to go running to Maddie then and there.
I'm the same at the end of the day...I can't wait to see her and hear what she is doing...I love the laughs and joy she shows when I go pick her up and I hate when traffic sucks and it takes ages to get to daycare!
If she is sick at daycare and they call me...then I'll walk straight out of work to go straight to her, no matter how minor the problem.
But if it is a normal day, then like you...I'm sweet now that I've worked through the other stuff.
I think it sounds one of many normal reactions!

my2angels - thank you for writing this post! I am due to go back to work in May and I am absolutely dreading it. I don't want to be away from my son and I think about, and worry about it constantly.
I'm so pleased to hear that you enjoy being at work - it makes me think that maybe it won't be so bad when I have to do it. Hopefully I'll be able to post something similar in the next few months or so.

I work part time and hate to say it but love going to work (might be different if I worked full time) Its my break from those four walls. I love my kids to bits and love getting back to them but also love work - I promised i would have a balance and i think i found it

I felt really guilty in the beginning too but that is all gone and forgotten now. I do enjoy work as it is time out without having to care about anyone else but myself. I must sound meaN too but it is tiring running around after 3 kids all day so going to work is a great out for me in my otherwise busy mummy world!!

I've been back at work for so long, I can hardly remember the begining. I did used to feel a little guily but it will pass.
When I'm at work, I tend to be sooooo busy I don't think about Gina or DH much at all, but hey on the other hand I don't think about work while I'm at home with them either! Also there is nothing wrong with enjoying work, after all you are more than just a mum and allowed to enjoy things other mummy-hood.
Are you a bad mum? Doesn't sound that way to me. Being happy & satisfied outside of the home doesn't make you a bad mum, just a normal person. After all, why shouldn't still enjoy things you used to before you were a mum?

Thanks everyone I feel heaps better even just admitting that Im happy.
Bayley I was dreading going back to work and i think its the best thing Ive done. I really thought I would be a total mess and miss the kids but its 100 times better than i thought it would be.

I don't feel guilty, but it definitely surprised me how much I enjoyed working again. I think when you're working too, you get so busy with work stuff that it's hard to find time to think about the kids often IYGWIM
