I'm so sick of hearing about all these innocent little children being abused and killed.
I wish there was something I could do!
I know I'm a good person but I'm pretty sure I don't 'qualify' as a foster parent because I'm single and on the DPB. And it pisses me off cos I know I would to a much better job at raising a child then a alcoholic, druggy, gambling low life. I have all this love to share with a child who has none....
ARGH
Sorry if this seems harsh or whatever, but I just wish I could do something.

Does anyone else feel the same?!

eta, ugh i just read over what i wrote, horrible spelling.

I KNOW! I just want to say 'look, give the baby to me. I'll love the poor wee thing, I'll look after it, you can get rid of it here.'

And the sad thing is, there are many many people who would happily do that with even less hassle than it would be for us - couples who are longing for children and would be overjoyed at the opportunity.

I want to foster kids, and fully plan to, but I'm waiting for ours to get a little older first. I couldn't do a troubled kid justice with a newborn. In the meantime, I'm at a bit of a loss.

I couldn't agree more, I hate reading about these poor little ones who can't help themselves and feeling so utterly helpless myself.

I only wish these little babies and children could go to deserving parents who would love them, I would take them in a heartbeat.

Does NZ have a no blame baby dumping policy like in some states in America - you know, if you go to a hospital or fire or police station you can hand the baby over, relinquish parental rights and walk away? You don't have to give any info? I am 99% sure we don't. Not that its a solution or anything but a better answer then murder. Pillow_Fight have you looked into a big sister/little sister program?

This topic gets me SO MAD!!! Its absolutely disgusting there are so many unwanted/unloved/unwashed/unclothed/ignored wee kiddies out there!!! Its just too damn easy to keep breeding these poor wee souls into the world.

And the nasty circle will mean that they will more than likely do the same to their own children.

I often wonder who waved that magic wand and decided our S could come and be with us and be loved and wanted as much as someone could ask for - and that chris, cru, nia etc etc etc had the wand tapped on their head and they went to a pack of scumbags...

Anyway - a family member of mine fosters kid on occasion and it drives them mad the amount of hoops they need to jump through to make it all work... Gah getting mad all over again!

PF, its normally run through churches or the sallies - they match an older person up with a 'disadvantaged' younger person and you spend one or two days a month with them, take them to the park or whatever. Or go to their school plays and special stuff that their parents might not bother (or might not be able to) show up to.

I read that a country, maybe Japan, has a 'drop off' box, no questions asked. When a baby is put in the 'box' a bell alerts staff who get the baby. I guess from there they make sure the baby is healthy and then over time arrange for it to be adopted. At first I thought OMG, a drop off box, what next, but then if that is the difference of keeping a baby alive and adopting it out to some wonderful potential parents then sure that is better than the alternative.

PF you can still foster if you are single just ring your local CYFS and ask about it they are usually crying out for foster parents (there is always a shortage) however CYFS are the only ones who do fostering there is also the open home foundation as well as others im sure.

I've heard about those 'drop off boxes' too Linda. I read about them when someone dropped a six-year-old off , which made the news and obviously wasn't exactly what they were intended for. I like the concept, but it's a bit risky I reckon (what if the alarm failed to go or something??)... even just what Bowie suggested, a place you can walk up to, sign your rights away and leave without anyone having to know would be better than nothing.

ETA that what gets me is these people who leave babies to die (like could possibly be the case with the baby in the stream, I guess we don't know yet). I mean, how hard is it to wrap it up and leave it on a cop shop doorstep, or even just some random persons doorstep. It's just as traceable/untraceable to you, and the poor wee thing might live...

Yeah in America if the baby is under a week old (i think) you can drop it off at a hospital, fire station or police station and there is no questions asked (other than is it yours to give away). I think its very good idea cause it means that the baby will go to a much better life. However it wouldnt work very well in the country as everyone knows everyone etc...

PF- Go for it! Talk to CYFS and see what they say, they will tell you what you need to do so you can be a foster mum.

The law varies state by state - some the child can be up to three years old which is a bit tough for the kid but again better then being abused/neglected. But a bit off topic. PF i agree with everyone else, have a look and see what you need to qualify!

unfortunately in NZ CYFS prefer the child to be with family or ideally either of the birth parents, if a pregnant women approaches CYFS as she wants to adopt out her baby then they put alot of pressure on her and her family for them to keep the child - there are so many amazing people wanting to adopt and yet no children (babies or older) who are available to adopt

and yes single people can foster/home for life - however they prefer if you are not working so you can concentrate on the child

Have you looked at http://www.fosterhope.co.nz/
You can help through an organisation such as this even if you can't do more due to your current circumstances

Thanks for the fosterhope website! Feel like there are things I can do now to help through that organisation. One day I would like to foster too, need my own family to be older though
