Ok so I've had a think about posting this for a little while now and have decided to get it off my chest.

I've never been on a forum before & only started interacting with OHbaby once I found out I was pg with this one. I was on the understanding that it was about talking with other mums-to-be about the experience you're going through at the same time, etc etc, & the topics regarding children & help/advice with certain stages.

I then see a topic recently under general chat regarding a certain religion - JW, & the excuses to use when they come door knocking. I'm certainly not one to be all P.C. about these things, but isn't it a bit too sensitive to joke of other peoples religious beliefs in such a way, when who knows how many people on this forum are a JW or of other religions? Would be like joking about a certain race & we know that's not acceptable.

I realise JW's are the butt of a lot of jokes - especially in the sit-com world - quite often when there's a knock at the door the comment is "oh no, bet it's a JW" hahahahaha. And to joke about it amongst your friends is also common. But when it comes to posting it on a forum which has many different races/religious people reading/interacting with it I feel its crossed the line.

I myself would not like to step on anyone's feet with posting this, but also felt like it needed to be said so there is no prejudice in the forums.

I sincerely apologise for this as I think it is my thread you are talking about.

I did not intend for it to be offensive in any way and it honestly didn't cross my mind that anyone would take offense.

I am certainly not a person who is predjudice to any type of race, religion or culture.

The JW boys that came to my house were lovely young boys and I would never be rude or offensive to them. They weren't offended with what I said and I shared it with you all in good humour without realising.

I am also on the understanding that this is a place where everyone can interact and share stories with regards to their pregnancy, babies and children.

I will definitely think before posting next time.

So, again I say sorry to anybody that was offended by that particular thread.

Just to clarify, the "general chat" section can relate to anything...so topics in there don't always have to only be about our babies and children.

Anyway, I don't think there was anything malicious in that thread. The JW's I know generally don't give a crap about what people think of them anyway. Also, I hear my fair share of "bloody asian drivers" comments and don't take it personally... So sure, people can take things too far, but in this case there is nothing to apologise for.

I alsowas one of the people that posted in that thread, and although I was sharing the story about what my brothers flatmates used to do (rather than myself) I can certainly see how this whole thread could be perceived.

I apologise if I caused any offence to anyone, as I certainly dont believe that I am in any way racist or prejudice against anyones religious beliefs, cultural beliefs or lifestyle choices.

The whole thread was meant in good humour, and although I agree - this is a forum to share stories regarding pregnancy, babies and children - I also think that it is a place to share those "everyday thoughts" that we all have.

Again - I sincerley apologise if I caused anyone offence.

You make a good point Italiah and one I never really thought of either.....I dont think anyone meant anything negative to JWs by the post and I could imagine the same post would work if it had been door to door sales people...or even telemarketers.

You do have a very good point though I must admit that in this instance I didn't take that post as being offence 9though I haven't read the whole thread) but rather just a humourous story.

I realise the general chat section is in regards to "everday" chitchat, but when it involves other peoples religions or race I was wondering if the line was being crossed.

I wasn't asking anyone who posted in that thread to apologise, I could see how it was all in good humour myself, but also where is the line when it comes to talking of others religion/beliefs? I myself haven't seen any threads or posts speaking of asian drivers, but I know when one is out with friends this would be joked about, as is JW's like I said originally.

To start off...let me say that my last post wasn't being said in a serious tone (I know it's hard to tell, because I typed it, as opposed to you hearing me say it).. and same goes this time. I'm saying this in a normal non-snarky or bitchy tone

What I was trying to get at is that I think by drawing attention to the issue of the JW thread in this separate thread, it just becomes a bigger deal than it really is, hence the reason some people now feel the need to apologise. In the time I have been on this site I haven't ever come across any racist or anti religious threads and everyone seems to have a pretty good respect for each other. So no, I don't think you intended to make ladies feel bad and now say sorry, it just happened.

Ultimately, I think if the line is ever crossed in these forums, there is never a shortage of ballsy mums/dads who will speak up in that thread, at the time to point it out. That way no-one would be left wondering "was that bad?". Again. Non-snarky.

BTW - I AM a bad driver

I'm sorry, I didn't read the thread so I am jumping in entirely uninformed...

but perhaps they were making fun of "door knockers" that just happened to be JW rather than the religion itself... I'm just as scathing about mormons or vacuum cleaner sales people that come to my house too.

Just my opinion... usually we are a very tolerant bunch. Don't be scared off!

I havent read that tread either, but sort off get what is going on. I, like you A dont joke about religion unless its my own!

I have heard some horrid comments in the past regarding me being Muslim, and tho I dont take it to heart I know it does bug me a bit....so I also never comment on these matters. My Mum was a Christian and my Husband is a Hindu...so I am surrounded by different religion.

I do think that pepople are allowed to disscuss religion on here but perhaps not make fun of it!! Again I dont know what happened in the other thread so......

I too particpated in the original thread and this is me speaking as Emma and not as admin...

I think Nikki is right - the thread could just as easily have been talking about vacuum cleaner salesmen, or even worse the pesky mobile phone man that has been driving me nuts over the past couple of weeks (take the hint man - I already own two mobiles, I do NOT need another!).

That said, I don't feel I need to apologise for the comments I made, as it wasn't my intention (and I don't believe my post conveyed) to criticise the JW's as a religion. I have said many times (and possibly even here a time or two) that I admire their religious conviction in that they are the butt of so many jokes, and get so many doors shut in their faces, and are subjected to so much abuse and so many taunts, and yet their faith is deep enough that still they continue. I am in envy of them for that - I wish my own personal faith was that deep.

Bizzarely, believe it or not, it gives a lot of JWs pleasure to be so well known for the preaching work that they do ... their aim in their preaching is to made their God's name, Jehovah, known, and to spread the 'good news' of his kingdom. Even through jokes etc, you're still recognising what they do, and that is go door to door with their message, and you know what they're called, so you know the name of their God too.

Yes, they're the butt of a lot of jokes ...believe me! Having been brought up one, I've heard more than my fair share. As for the jokes on TV ...we used to sit there if we heard one, and laugh, but feel a bit proud at the same time that we were so well known.

In saying that of course, we were just one JW family ...there are different people and viewpoints in every cross-section of society.

Asian drivers though? That's a whoooole other story!!

There is a blog I visit every day, and there was a storming great argument on the same sort of topic theme quite recently (the blogger posted, and there were literally hundreds of comments to and fro). It stemmed from a gay joke I think ...just the bloggers usual humour (she has gay friends and feels comfortable joking this way, and most don't find her offensive)

You do forget though about the lurkers and though a lot of us 'know' each other really well, and therefore 'get' where we're coming from on certain things, lurkers who don't know us might take a step back, and for that reason, I think there are probably a few people out there that really appreciate you going in to bat for them Italiah.

Ditto!

Nothing to apologise for from that thread in my opinion!

my 2c worth...

if people want to apologise then they can, i dont think that italiah was asking or expecting anyone to apologise...

and italiah has a good point, would it be tolerated if it were anti gay or anti black (or asian). quite possibly not.

and good on italiah i say for putting her opinion out there.

i also am pretty sure that everyone is very aware of what "general chat" means.
