I am returning to NZ after almost 4 years abroad.. first time mamma to be...
I know i am suppose to wash everything before the baby is born..
can you recommend which washing powder/products are best for a newborn ??

After trying a few I have found the Am-O-Lin liquid fantastic for Jody's clothes and nappies.
To be honest, I didn't bother washing most of the new clothes, just the second hand ones. I did sniff all the new clothes and if they smelt 'perfume-y' then I would wash them.
I also like to add a drop of tea tree oil (Thursday Plantation) to all of her wash loads, it's a natural anti-bacterial and smells yummy.

I use cold water surf - fragrance free or the eco-store powder (which is my favourite and fantastic but slightly more expensive). I have a history of allergies to washing powder so avoid using anything that I havn't washed my own clothes in as a "trial run" first.

Like flutterby I am allergic to a lot of washing powders. For my baby clothes I just use persil sensitive but I only use 1/2 a scoop and I do an extra rinse cycle to ensure there's no washing powder residue.

My daughter has very senstive skin. I have always washed her clothes from the very first wash in Ecostore washing powder.

We use the eco store washing powder - we only buy it when on special and it lasts a long time as i only wash his clothes in it - Our wee one gets excema and this powder doesnt irritate him at all - and there is no fragrance to it.
I washed all his clothes before he wore them - new or second hand.
We love Italy - would love to live there, good luck with adjusting back to Kiwi life

I have washed all of Roman's clothes, brand new & secondhand, with Eco-Store. You only need to use a little bit so lasts a long time

I use Eco-store for Novella's nappies and all of our washing. For her clothes I use BEE.. Its smells awesome! And its environmentally friendly.
So you're coming back from Italy!? My DH is Italian and we're planning our move back there next year.. can't wait for MIL's cooking again

I went with good old lux flakes. Plain and simple so therefore, in my opinion, trustworthy. They've been great, they work really well and smell so good and baby-like too! I bought a $2 shop 'milkshake shaker' thing that we use just for it cuz you have to dissolve the flakes in warm water. I never use as much as the box says, I just half fill the container with warm(ish!) water, pour some in, shake it up (most of the time I'm lazy and can't be bothered waiting until it's anywhere near dissolved, lol ) and add it to my load.
I prewashed everything before Bethany was born, except for woollen garment she was given cuz I decided they'd take too long to dry! Then after she was born and she was given clothes as gifts I got to the point where I stopped worrying about washing them first and it made no diff to her skin or anything (and she's got very senstive, eczema-y skin). It's entirely up to you how much you wash, really.
All the best with your move!! Have fun getting ready for baby 
ETA - and for her nappies I use the baby napisan soak which is also fine on her skin, then toss some ecostore laundry liquid in when I put them in the wash

I'm in the process of washing everything at the moment but we only use Cold Power (or something like that). I have eczema so we've always washed once, rinsed twice.... think that should do for my wee man.
