I've been pondering this all afternoon. I work next door to Borders and they allow people to read in the store, they have armchairs and everything. Anyway I was flicking through a 'teen' book and it was all about this 14 year old girl who had a crush on her art teacher. She started babysitting his kids, fell in love with him, one night he was driving her home, she kissed him, he kissed her back, told her he loved her blah blah blah. Anyway in the book the head teacher found out and moved the girl to another school, nothing happened to the teacher and that was the end of it.

Is it just me or does this send the wrong message to the teen girls who might be reading the book, at the age where they do have crushes on their teachers

That is definately the wrong message! Even if the girl initiates something the teacher is abusing his position of trust and responsibilty. Did you bring it to the attention of the book store? They shouldn't be selling that to young girls.

WOW thats shocking and its not true, if anyone found out the teacher would not be allowed to teach anymore - surely.

Its all the wrong message for teenagers, I think you should report the book too.

Yeah sounds bad. I had a crush on my teacher when I was 13 and that sounds exactly like the sort of thing I would have liked to have read to get my hopes up! You can't ban all books though and there are plenty of worse things out there let's face it.

Definitely wrong, I agree that Borders management should be told.  What a pity we don't have the same restrictions and regulations on books as we do on movies and video games (PG, R16, M etc).

i think i know that book - is it the one by Jacqueline Wilson? I read it too and thought it a bit of a bad ending - basically the girl lied to to the head teacher and said it was all her fault as she led him on or something like that . . .. so the teacher gets away with it . . . .

at the time i thought it a bit bizarre- he should have been hauled over the coals for it - I mean - she was 14!

but i don't think it should necessarily be pulled off the shelves - just maybe some books should have warnings or advice on them as plenty of 8-9 year old girls read jacqueline wilson

ETA - actually, if it had a warning on it, it would be EXACTLY the kind of book young kids would seek out! - i remember "Forever" by Judy Blume doing the rounds ar my primary school . . . though most of the boys only read one or two certain pages

Yeah that is the one, I couldn't remember the author but that is it. I've never heard of her but there were a number of books by her so she is obviously a popular author for that age group.

I havent read that book, but i did read alot of her books when i was 11-14 so definatly the wrong age group to send those sort of messages.

BUT... she is a really great author and not all her books are like that.

OMG, that is so funny. When I first read this thread that is exactly the book I was thinking of. My mum caught me reading it when I was around 12ish and took it off me
