Topic: jakes teeth Posted: 14 November 2008 at 7:15pm |
am feeling a bit crap today. we have been trying to get Jake into a dentist for a while. We had tried Plunket, under the mistaken impression that we needed to go through them. his last check was in Gisborne, through playcentre. anyway, through some friends we went to the local primary school and he has SIX holes!!!!! I am so gutted. he brushes his teeth, but obviously isn;t doing a good job about it. the dental nurse actually made me feel quite bad about it. she blames honey sandwiches for lunch.
"does he not brush his teeth after lunch?" - well no he doesn't...well not yet.
"you need to make sure he only drinks water" - well he does, apart from lemonade for birthdays and sick days
So we bought a new toothbrush and paste for daycare. raisins are now a lunch food, not a snack food. and no more lollipops at the supermarket.
his dad has weak teeth, so maybe heriditary (am guessing now), but am feeling quite negligent for not taking him earlier.

It's probably heriditary - don't feel too bad about it.
I don't know anyone (in my generation) who brushed their teeth after lunch. Is it the done thing now days?

Geez who brushes their teeth after lunch?
Don't feel bad, it's bloody hard to get kids to brush their teeth properly!! It's not fair she grilled you about what you're feeding him. Even non sugary foods can cause it, which worries me as Alyssa drinks milk before bed (and after her nightly brush)..I'm gonna have to sort that out soon..

Awww don't worry about it, I would say it's probably hereditary etc. It's hard enough for us to remember to get our girls to brush their teeth often but we've been fortunate so far. And Plunket referrals to dental nurses in PN basically doesn't happen

 IT IS HERIDITARY!!
bad teeth are unfortunatly, it is very true!
we see it every day.
and i feel your pain as my girl has awfull teeth too.
and unfortunatly dental nurses (some of them) can be horribly harsh (i wont be one of them!)
it could be the honey but i dont think so unless its being spread on really super thick!
rasins are fine there is a stigmaabout them causing decay which we think is B/S.
it could be anything at all!
sarah has awfull teeth (same as her dad) she has a filling in Every tooth including her front ones, and she has had 2 teeth removed 1under GA, i use every expensive, cream, past, tablet to try and strengthen her teeth but nothing works at all i just hope her adult teeth are stronger.
please dont blame yourself,
unless your one of those parents who lets their kids live on fizzy drinks and lollies and doesnt know what a tooth brush is (and there are parents out there like that ) but your not to blame at all.
and to everyone else - dental visits are free untill your child is 18, contact 1 of your local primary schools for a appointment :)
(dont ring plunket )

Not all places do the free dental visits , (ours doesnt for example ) but the dental nurses are free , if your in Auckland tho , they are no longer at every primary school like they were back "in our day " ...and the one Caitlyn went to , didnt make the cotton butterfly things .....
Pah , ignore the dental nurse LIz, as others have said , its hereditary , if you were feeding him coke and lollies allll the time I would say it was due to that , but honey occasionally wont do much damage .
And yes ,they recommend brushing three times a day , but meh , who can be bothered doing that ?
Caitlyn has already had 2 fillings , (she gets it from her dad's side, ive never had a filling in my life ) , and her mother's a dental assistant , shock horror !

i have 1 filling ( touchwood as i sit here drinking my large beam& coke ;) cant remember when i got it tho.
you can ring your local hospital and they can tell you where the nearest school that has a dental clinic is or ring your local primary school and if they dont have one theyll tell you the nearest one that does, we dont see the kiddies either unless a dental nurse refers tham to us which is free otherwise it costs $$$

it's hereditary liz!
my brother has disgusting yellow teeth, smokes and has only in the last few years started brushing them everyday (he's 30!)
he got his first filling when he was in his 20's!
DH brushes morning and night, with flossing in between, has nice white teeth but has had 5 taken out, probably needs another 2 out. they just decay no matter how hard he tries to look after them
hmmmmm maybe it's because both his parents had false teeth before they were 40 and his brother (3yrs older) has false teeth on the top

good, because a stinky old dental nurse shouldn't make you feel bad !
Should point out tho , that bad teeth can be both hereditary but for some people it is caused by eating too much sugar , not brushing enough and lots of smoking , other people do all these things and never get one filling .
Bottom line, teeth are weird .
If your child is referred to a dentist by a dental nurse and its free , its an SDB , if your child is 13 to 18 then most places do GDBs , which is free treatment for them ,our place does neither

Is your family in Chch?
They're is no flouride in the water and there is a lot of tooth decay as a result. Our flatmate is from Chch and he's pretty strict with his dental hygiene.
