Topic: Carseat Conundrum (sp) Posted: 06 January 2009 at 6:33pm |
Isabelle is nearly at the weight limit for rear facing in her carseat (12kgs)
Apart from a Brio (which is way out of our price range) the only find one other carseat that will reverse face to a higher weight limit and its only 3kgs more .. which seems a lot of money for a not very long amount of time.
Anyway it got me thinking. She seems to have lots of room in there so I was wondering if I could keep her rear facing for longer.
I mean what happens to tall kids that are really light (eg there body becomes too long for the seat, but they are under the weight, do they get turned around quicker)
Or really heavy but teeny kids .. do they turn just because they are a certain weight even if they are not quite ready.
If so confused.
Im sure she would be fine if I turned her around .. its probably just the Mummy in me not being ready for it.
Although it would be a great excuse to buy one of those cute pink seats like mrsmojo has

I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with how far their head is from the top of the seat for safety. I'd call plunket and ask them.

There's a car seat "ask an expert" on this site too.

I would keep her rear facing for as long as she is happy to be that way.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

you may find her weight gain could start to slow down ie she may not reach 15kgs for another 3-4 years.

Good point about the weight gain! I just assumed because she gained 12 kgs in a year that the next three would be quick.

Here are a few extracts from an article about the safety of rear-facing vs forward-facing carseats for you lilfatty:
"By supporting the entire posterior torso, neck, head, and pelvis, a rear-facing car seat (RFCS) distributes crash forces over the entire body rather than focusing them only at belt contact points. In contrast with a forward-facing car seat (FFCS), an RFCS supports the child’s head, preventing the relatively large head from loading the proportionately smaller neck with relatively weak neck musculature.
...In the USA, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have developed guidelines stating that a child should be at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds before transitioning from an RFCS to an FFCS.4 5 The age of the child, in particular, is an important factor which correlates with the material properties of the child’s anatomy, such as muscular development and ossification of the cervical spine. Although the policy of the American Academy of Pediatrics states ‘‘for optimal protection, the child should remain rear facing until reaching the maximum weight for the car safety seat, as long as the top of the head is below the top of the seat back’’, a common interpretation of these guidelines by parents and caregivers has been that children should be automatically switched to an FFCS when they are 1 year old or 9.2 kg (20 pounds). For this reason, few children in the USA remain rear facing past their first year of age, despite the fact that there are currently many RFCSs that have maximum weight limits beyond 9.2 kg.
....Results of this study reflect that RFCSs are more effective in protecting restrained children aged 0–23 months and are associated with less likelihood of severe injury than FFCSs. Of importance, these findings apply specifically to 1 year olds in all crashes. To take maximum advantage of car seat protection, parents should prolong use of the RFCS (in accordance with restraint recommendations for child size and weight)."

You will probably find that she only puts on a couple of kg in the next year - have a look in your plunket book at the growth chart and see how she may track.
Danaj is right - it is more important where the top of the head is. If the head is about the top of the seat it is time to change. Try and keep her rear facing for a while longer yet.

Thanks guys .. I want to keep her rear facing as long as I can.
Her head isnt anywhere near the top even though she is nearing the weight limit so I was hoping it would be ok (But thought I should check).

Yeah Spencer weighed about 8.5kg at 12 months and now only weighs 9.5kg. Yes he is a teeny tiny toddler....lol
You might want to talk to baby on the move I found them really helpful. We bought a brio zento and the lady fitted it into the car for us and seemed to have more knowledge about the seats than the people at babycity/factory.
With regards to the weight/height thing. Spencer's capsule went up to 13.5kg but we had to take him out of it when he was about 8kg as his head was too far up the back of it.

Leah is over two and 13.5kgs, I think she was nearly 11kgs at one.
We changed her carseat to one like Mrsmojos when Leahs ears were out the top of the carseat (hadn't really noticed until another thread made me go and check ) and sure enough she was too tall but not at the max weight.

I agree with the slower weight gain...DS was 10 kg at 1 and did not reach 15kg till 2 1/2. Just wait and see.

The weight and height is just a recommendation - remember it was only a couple of years ago that the norm was 6mos. 12kg sounds like a pretty healthy weight for a 1yo, I'd go for it and turn her on her birthday. (As far as weight goes, a couple of months ago my 3yo was 14kg and my 1 1/2 yo was 12.5kg)

Yup, she should slow right down in her weight gain now that she is active. Janaya was 10kgs at 6 months, 12kgs at 1 year and 13kgs when she was 24 months I think.
Im glad I read this, im going to keep Jackson in his seat rear facing for as long as possible.

I would just keep her in it as long as her weight doesn't drastically go over the limit.
Jack's only 9.5kg at 12mo and we have turned him round mainly because he started getting too knowing and travelling was a PITA with a screaming child. Now he's forward its so much easier, though I would have liked to keep him rear facing for longer but a year's OK with me.
