Topic: Wow! What a great way to sell things! Posted: 11 February 2008 at 10:28am |
Or not! I just had the rudest phone call from someone trying to sell me a discounted phone account.
She asked to speak to the phone account holder and then asked me if I was sure it was me!
Then she told me "I'm calling on behalf of insert well known phone/internet provider's name here and I want to see if you're eligible for a 30-50% discount on your phone account."
I said "I'm sorry but I'm not interested in transferring my account at the moment"
She demanded "What? Why don't you want to transfer, we can give you a discount"
I replied "I'm happy with the company we currently use and don't want to change, thanks" (Truth being we have used their company in the past and had no end of internet problems with them)
She said (nearly shouting) "That's stupid, we're a 100% kiwi owned company, why don't you want to be with us?!"
I told her that there was no need to be aggressive with me, that I'd told her how I felt and to leave it at that.
She continues to tell me how dumb I am not to take her up on this fantastic offer and I hang up on her.
Seriously, what kind of sales pitch is that?!

I had a woman the other day ring me at work and try and sell something about insurance saving money on lawyers fees etc, I kept saying Im not interested thanks and then she kept on going on and on and on, in the end I said thanks but we have a lawyer in the family anyway so we can get it cheap thanks bye, then she goes yeah right sure everyone has a lawyer in their family... now whats your address so I can send you the information, again I say no thanks - then she says thats a funny address now would you mind hurry up please madam I need your address so I can get on to ring other deserving customers!!!
WTF?! I was seriously standing with the phone in my hand going did that just actually happen!
Crazy how they can talk like that hey!

Its getting ridiculous isn't it!"
I was in the Mall and this guy selling facial scrub stops me (I HATE these people but can never say no ) and goes 'I can see you don't have very good skin...'!!! Then I heard the lady on the other side say it to another poor woman so it was obviously their sales strategy. Make customers feel cr*p about themselves so they buy your scrub!
Mum had a organisation ring the other day asking for donations- its a cause she liked so decided she would give them some money. She was thinking around $20 and then he goes "So can I put you down for a donation of $100?" to which she said no, then he asked $75, then $50 and then at that point she told him she was going to give $20 but shes changed her mind because now she feels bad for giving so little because they asked for so much. He acted all disappointed but said $20 WOULD DO but she told him no and to reassess his strategy because making people feel awful for how little they can give is not a good way to go about getting donations!
I know that they're just doing their jobs- it must be tough work doing cold calls, but making people feel terrible or yelling at them is not the way to endear people to your company!

We're not listed in the phone-book yet (Renting) so I think we manage to escape these weird calls (I'd just hang up as soon as I realised they were trying to sell me something anyway) DF has worked in a call centre before, taking in-going calls... I see now why he refuses to do out-going!

I had a well known heatpump/aircon company ring me on Friday to say they were coming down to Palmy and that they would be down our street doing demos. I told them I wasn't interested and she was like but all the condensation in the winter and I told her I have a log burner I don't get it. She was yelling down the phone to me and then said so what time should we come around? I just told her i wouldn't be home (true I was out for a bit of the day) and wasn't interested and she said it was my loss. I felt like ringing the company back up to make sure it really was them and to let them know how I was spoken too, but Josh needed me.
I'm so PMing you Mel to find out that company, might be the same one that rung DH last year.

Thats pretty bad. She mustn't get much commission if she's like that to potential customers.

hehe I had the call from Slingshot - they were polite, but foreign and went over everything 3 times, then a supervisor would call back and go over all my info again!! I got sucked in to go with them, and other than them cutting off my broadband, I haven't had any issues yet... but has only been 3 months...

i cant believe that, that is just soooo bad. I would definately be complaining about all these salespeople.
I always get the insurance salespeople for some reason and when i say no not interested they try to argue that its a really good deal blah blah blah and who are we with now and im sure we will be cheaper and then I tell them we get it for free through hubbys work and can they beat that and it shuts them up pretty quickly
