Topic: How bad can it get? Posted: 29 January 2009 at 7:44am |
Grrrr! Kylah is sick again, ear and throat infection and i have noone to look after her but me. DF took the day off tuesday to look after her and the doctor faxed his boss a medical but he rang DF and tried to fire him, gave him a weeks notice.
I have taken 6 sick days this month to look after her including today, im not sure how much more lenient my work is going to be.
Why is she sick all the time?
Is there something i can give her like some sort of vitamins to keep sickness away, or at least boost her immune system?
Its stressing me out alot!
Iv just picked up and extra 10 hours at work as we need the money and this is just my second week doing 30 hours but iv had to call in sick twice this week already!!

Hugs Kandice - I sooooo know what you are going through!
For the first year that Joshua was in daycare he spent four entire months home sick. Seriously, four months. Was usually ear/throat things, but it seemed he picked up every little thing that was going round the centre. It got to the point that he would go back to daycare after a week off, some other child would have a snotty nose - next morning Josh would have a full blown cold
My GP told me it was quite the norm when kids start daycare. Unfortunately you will just have to ride it out until her immune system gets used to being in contact with the multitudes of bugs the other kids all carry. Its horrible for you and her, but unless you remove her from the daycare it will keep happening for a wee while yet.
PM me if you want some coping strategies!! I used to get so mad when I took Josh back to daycare and there would be some other kid there who clearly was unwell and shouldn't have been there. I was being a responsible adult by keeping my child away from others when they were unwell, but other parents didn't give the same courtesy.

Thanks for posting, i will PM you later when i have more time.
I just feel bad for work too..

as joshierocks said it's normal...kids either are sick all the time for a few months to a year or they are fine..unfortunately Kylah seems to be one of those kids:( I wouldn't worry about vitamins as shes way too little to swallow them by choice:) I'd just try to give her vit c when you can(like oranges etc) and as much as it sucks there really isnt a cure:(
big hugs to you though:( sorry I couldn't offer anything good!:)

After a while she will have an awesome immune system and you will have a little school kid that never gets sick! Thats what I tell myself when Noah gets sick from daycare over the winter. Hope things get better and your employer is understanding.

I was told by my doctor to get some of those berocca type (not actually berocca but similar) for kids. They like the fizzy drink and its boosting their immune system. Every day for two weeks then every two to three days after that for a month.
Helped us a lot.

oh I really feel for you Kandice, it sucks when your child is sick and you have the added guilt and worry about your job on top of it .
Im lucky now, cos I only do 10 hours , but when I did 40 , I used to dread Caitlyn getting sick .
Hopefully she gets better very soon, looks like theres some good advice here too

Go to a health food shop and see what they can suggest for her. A naturopath maybe able to help also. I'm sure there is a liquid you can give her that has a whole heap of vitamins and minerals to help with that sort of thing but best bet will be the health food shop

I have seen at the chemist some stuff called Immune Support or something similar, I thinks its a natural vitamin type thing, and its drops that use with an eye dropper. Also I would highly recommend zinc drops that you put in water, they are cheap and you cannot taste them.

My advice would be to keep her away from other things like people and pools, keep her home, warm with plenty of sunshine and fresh fruit and veges.
Best of luck

so has your DPs boss actually fired him? or tried to? cause if he has, call a lawyer immmediately and file a personal grievance. they can't fire you for this (they can just annoy you into resigning kinda)

True lizzle...also cannot give him a warning for it. Make sure he documents everything incase they annoy you into resigning...constructive dismissal.
Hope Kylah gets better soon

He would love to resign but we cant afford it.
Hes an as*hole.
He continually rings DF on a sunday night when hes spent all dy at the pub (boss i mean) and has a go at him for nothing.
When DD was in hospital he told DF that he was lying.
He also said while i was listening that raising the kids is a womans job and that he doesnt believe in daycare and that i should be at home looking after them! (I was about to yell out and say pay him double and sweet as!
Hes really mean and constantly has a go at him.
He never believes DF even if he has a medical certificate. He wont even pay out sick days without a fight.
He hasnt said anything to him yet about being fired. He just said you have a weeks notice and DF said you cant do that!

Oh he wont even give DF a payslip either no matter how many times he asks and threatens to sack him over everything! No warnings nothing. He pays DF by cash deposit into his bank account, i dont know why because he pays Dfs tax and ACC levies etc. I think the way he sees it is DF is a 'casual employee' so can fire him anytime he likes.

Um, i would document every instance that the boss does dodgy things. Just keep a book - write exactly what happens - dates, time and any other people there. don't write opinions, just what happened.
If anything happens - or even if your DP quits, it sounds like you could claim work-place bullying or unfair dismissal. And some of those things don't sound...legal. Keep records.

I would be asking to see an ENT to see if they is an issue with her ears.
As for the boss like Liz said they can't fire him over this, and not giving a payslip is illegal (I think). Ring DOL they will be able to help.

That is a very good case for constructive dismissal. I agree document it. Record the phone calls etc. See if you can get legal advice - some do it pro-rata.
Your poor DH and poor you. How stressful for you both. I hope the b#strd ends up old and alone in a home and then realises why raising children is so important.
Is there anyone in Chc who can take her for a day or two?
