Topic: Urgent Cat Help?? Posted: 13 June 2009 at 7:32pm |
Our cat is a neutered eight year old Maine coon X. He went missing for about 48hrs and has come back a very lethargic, quiet animal.
When I say lethargic and quiet, he is generally very playful, but now will sit where I put him. Until I turn my back, and then he ducks under the bed. He is a very 'talkative' animal but I don't know the last time I heard him meow.
He is eating and drinking fine, but took a massive pee over the bed rather then in the tray, and he is toilet trained. I haven't found any poops.
He is prone to abscesses but I haven't found any. He has previously been tested FIV negative and I believe is vaccinated against it.
I'm having a stress because I can't get hold of a vet. I live rurally.
Can I take any comfort in the fact that he's still running under the bed, eating, drinking and peeing, or am I going to lose my cat?

I would just try not to panic, and get in touch with a vet when you can. When our cat acted really similarly to this, we took him to the vet and it turns out he had gotten a scratch on his leg which got infected. He went back to normal within a few days of starting antibiotics.
Thinking of you, and hoping that it's something similar and easy to treat!

I think all you can do is keep an eye on him and keep trying to get a hold of a vet.
Hope that everything is fine with him.

Flake, do you have some rescue remedy (or idealy some Biopet 'relax'- but rescue remedy will do)? If he isn't hurt then it could simply be stress. Maybe he has had an awful couple of days stuck somewhere and freaked out?
Ideally it's best to put a few drops on his tongue, but if that makes him stressed you can spray it around him and where he sleeps, also on his food and in his water.
Definatly don't panic, it sounds to me like he is just a bit upset.
Peeing on the bed is another sign of stress.
Great that he is eating/drinking.
Keep him calm, give him lots of cuddles when he wants them. Call the vet when you can just to get him checked out for physical injuries.
I hope you have your old chatty boy back soon

I agree, he's probably just had a traumatic experience and just needs lots of love at the moment. He could be a bit lethargic if he hasn't had anything to eat or drink for the 48 hours. Definitely still get him checked over just in case but he's probably just going to need a bit of time to settle down.
I hope he'll be okay

I have a Maine Coon X cat also and it is so obvious with him when something is not right as they have such strong personalities. We have had the exact same circumstances with him more than once and on 2 of those occasions he has come right within 24 hours and then the other time the vets found a scratch that was infected and he had to have antibiotics.
If it was me I would get an appt with a vet ASAP if he has not come right in 24 hours, but definitely take comfort in the fact that he is eating and drinking and has most likely just had a big fright.
Hope he gets better soon!
P.S I think Maine Coon cats are just the best pets, ours is the most snuggly, talkative cat who even loves to play with my 18 month old nephew, its almost like having another dog!

Our maine coon has had some urinary problems and one sign of that is not being able to make it outside to pee, ours also had blood in his wee which was very concerning. If he starts straining to pee though you need to get him to a vet immediately as that is a sign of crystals and a blocked uretha and that is very very serious.
Of course yours may just not want to go outside cos he's had a fright from something.
I would just give him lots of time to settle back into his surroundings and then if still not right get him in to see a vet tomorrow.
Fingers crossed he comes right soon for you and that it's nothing that needs treatment.

The one time our cat (a 4 yr old SPCA moggy) has not used his litter box, was lethargic, not his usual self and not eating much, he had a blood parasite that attacked red blood cells. He became really anemic which was why he was so lethargic. He needed to stay overnight at the vet and was on meds for about a week afterwards. Fully recovered by the time he finished his meds. An expensive ($400!!!) exercise, but well worth it. Not sure if that helps? Good luck and hope things improve soon.

Our Chinchilla Persian died last year of a blocked bladder, and he had the same symptoms as your kitty.
He didnt come home one night which is very unusual for him, I found him the next morning under a bush at the front door and he wouldnt move, so I had to drag him out. He was very scatty and didnt want to be touched, so I took him to the vets, they checked him over and said there seemed to be nothing wrong and to keep him warm and in a quiet room until he comes right, I ended up taking him back to the vet the next day cos he wasnt eating and he seemed very unhappy. The vet checked him over again, and this time his bladder was full and blocked, so the vet said he would need to stay in over night and have it drained and unblocked etc and we could pick him up the next morning.
When I called in the morning, they had tot ell me that Harry had died over night The vet said his urine was bascily blood when they drained it as it has been putting pressur eon his kidneys and damaged them.
So definitly get it checked out cos it happens so fast We still miss HArry like crazy, he was only JUSt a year old...
