yeah all the kids in my family have had naming ceremonies rather than christenings. You can get info off internet or just ring a JP, you will find them in the yellow pages and it often says which ones will do naming ceremonies (I think most do) there are some really cool ideas around to oh and I remember treasures having an article about them in thier mag at some stage too so there maybe info on thier website. Basically you just pick a jp, a date and plan a wee service which can include welcoming your baby to the family, readings and promises for everyone to help raise your child and be a positive part of thier life. My sisters still had god parents who did readings during the service and I read a poem at my other neices naming. You can get naming ceremony candles to light, plant a tree or the placenta if you kept it. One idea I remember was to give everyone seeds to plant to symbolise thier comitment and contribution to helping raise your child. Heaps of ideas around but as i said for a start I would arrange a justice of the peace

We had one for Zac when we went home to NZ. We used the same JP that married us (who is also my mum's friend). Not sure if you're in Auckland or not but her name is Shirley Bond - I can get her details for you if you like. I got a really nice reading off the internet (lots of people commented on it) - I just googled naming ceremonies.

We had the naming ceremony, then had bubbles and afternoon tea afterwards, oh and lots of family photo's.

you might want to try doing some research on the cultural aspects of them - say african etc as that may give you an idea of what they should entail or are based on...we went to an african one whcih was an eye opener and an amazing day.

You could just do an unofficial ceremony, invite all the family and let the parents "ceremonise"... and don't forget cake and nibbles!

my friend is currently planning her wee girls one. They are going to have a casual thing at a park and then a bbq after. They are having a JP doing the service and they are having wishing stones, everyone takes a stone (one of those colour glass stone things) and makes a wish or whatever for babys future and then the put it in a special vase type thing for baby to keep. Oh and her partners daughter is going to read a wee poem.
My sister had one for my nephew in January and we just had a bbq around at thier place, had the JP etc.. still and it was really nice and casual too

That sounds like a cool idea Robyn, with the wishing stones. I have probably left it a bit late but I have always felt like Ella has missed out with not being christened, so I want to have a special day just for her.. It will be very casual and I will make a name cake for her, and ask people to bring a plate, no presents. Thinking about getting her a name bracelet too, engraved.

I was thinking about doing a naming thing on Addisons birthday but doing both of them at the same time cos we didnt do anything for Kobe and I regret it. Oh and also a good idea is to have a wee book people can write messages for the child in, kind of like what you do at a 21st or wedding.
