Hello.
Mark came home last night and said there was a possibilty he would be doing a job in Ohakune from the 14th August to about the 23rd. He wanted to ask me what I thought. He is keen to do it because of the money & experience etc but of course if I happened to come early (which is a possibility as Paige was a couple of weeks early and fast labour) he would be a bit of a drive away. And the midwife does not think this one is going to take long at all either.
Im not too sure how I feel about it.

What would you guys do?????

tough call, how long would it take him to get back? We had a similar situation this time round too with hubby being asked to go to a conference in Auckland (which is obviously a distance from christchurch) Because Kobe was 6 weeks early we decided to play it safe and him not to go but then Addison was induced anyway. Unfortunately though there were lots of things he missed out on because of the uncertaintey of when baby would come. Sorry not much help but I think you have to decide how important it is for him to go.

Daniel works for a contractor and may be in Auckland when i go into labour, we are in morrinsville. I am not going to make him stop working or say he can't go up there because what if i am late or early for that matter.

I have my mum as a second support person if he doesn't make it but he will just keep working until i ring him and say Ethan is on the way.

Hopefully the first stage will take a while so he has time to get back here.

The hardest thing for us is that we need the money so i am not going to tell him to stop working it would stress us both.

Hope this helps.

Where are you? LOL I can tell you how long it would take (approx) to get from Ohakune to wherever! When are you due?

If it helps, I told Nat he can't go away to the Coromandal the first week of November (I'm due the 11th) on a school camp.

It takes us 4 hours to get from Ohakune to my inlaws place in Hairini (Welcome Bay side) on the edge of Tauranga: that's 1.5 hours to Taupo, 45 min to Rotorua and 1 hour to Tauranga (yes, I know it doesn't add up, but not including stops it still takes us those individual times yet 4 hours total!)

I'm guessing the bridge is probably either up the mountain a little, towards National Park, or on the Paraparas (SH4 to Wanganui)... but I haven't heard anything yet... it'll probably be in next week's local paper.

As far as how close it is to when you are due... that is something you are going to have to consider yourself... bear in mind when Paige arrived but also talk to your midwife and see what she thinks about the possiblilty of you going into labour before your due date. Kiya was probably 2 weeks early (based on appearance at birth) but my midwife didn't think I'd go early with Josiah despite three weeks of useless contractions before he arrived bang on his due date.

I guess it also depends if you have someone else like your Mum or a friend to be there 'just in case' your DH doesn't get back in time.

I'd say go with your gut. If it feels really wrong for him to go then put your foot down, but if not, then just have a stern conversation with bubs about when he is allowed to come out!

Thats a hard one. If it were me... but thats me, lol. I would not want Glenn to go away around due date. it would be too stressful for me and would be unhappy. If you have any signs that labour has started like the show, etc It would probably be a risk but then again 4 hours is a fair bit of time to get back in early stages of labour,. (maybe).

It really depends how you feel about the possibility of not having Mark there through the whole process with you. Also to me having a baby is the most important event in our lives and if Glenn missed it then he would probably regret it. Just my opinion.

Kelpa I am in a very similar situation - my hubby is gong to have to be out of town for 4 weeks (abotu 6 hoiurs away) for work from about week 34 to week 38 for me... I was pretty upset at first but he really wanted to do it cos it was with a company he has been trying to do some work for for ages 9i think if i put my foot down I could make him stay though), and when I saw how bad he wanted to go I thought well if it comes early and he isnt here then so be it... I dont have the energy to fight over it and I would probably just be worrying for nothign since likelyhood is the baby will not arrive before 38 weeks (ugh! hate saying stuff like that cos then life just bites you in the bum by doing exactly the opposite doesnt it?!?!?) But yeah, I made my peace with the fact that there is a chance he wont be there, but just going to keep positive that he will be there and if he isnt I have my mum as a back up...

And I think it is exactly liek Kellverona said - if you can accept that he might not be there then its ok, but if that possibility is totally out of teh question for you then make him stay - it's really an individual thing I think!

Well considering DH is in the air force there will always be a posibility he won't even be in the country when it comes time for me to give birth (yeah I know, gotta get preggers first). I have come to terms with this and will have plenty of family/friends for support when the time comes.

but again as everyone else as said, it is totally up to you and how you feel about it - put your foot down if necessary, you have the right too.

I wouldn't want Peter to be away but I don't think he would want to either! If it were me/us I would ask Peter to stay... Tough call though!!

I have told my Hubby to go to the U2 concert that we planned to go to in March before they cancelled it. It is on the 24th Nov (I am due 28th) and in auckland would probably take him 5 hours to get home once he got out of the concert - chances are he wouldn't even hear his phone go off there anyhow - he doesn't know what to do as he is a huge fan of U2 but certainly doesn't want to miss out on being at his childs birth - he did say straight out no but I sort of convinced him maybe he should go.

I can't remember who said that it all depends if you have a back up support person as well. I would have my mum but I know nothing would beat having Brendan (hubby) there. Its a very special time and really truth be known I would be gutted if he missed birth because of a U2 concert.

If it were me, I'd say no - but I am VERY nervous and unsure about whole thing (being first time around etc) I also don't have my mum or sister here as a backup - if I did I would possibly be different. It is definitely a personal decision though and I think only you can know how you feel about it. If it makes you feel bad I would say no. Good luck with decision.

My husband wanted to go to the Dubai 7's - I was due on the 14th of December and it started on the 29th of November. I said no and it was lucky I did as my waters broke on the 29th of November. Is it possible for him to go for just part of the time?

Thanks for all your advice. I have decided he can go.Its a good opportunity and the money is great. I dont have a Mum or Sister for back-up but have a good friend who I have asked if he is not here could she take me and be my support person til he got there (in that time it might be all over - oh well!!)Jo has had four kids and I feel good knowing she could be there.
I would have asked Grandma and Grandad but feel a bit odd about theat. Plus they are going to have Paige.

:o)

Mark reckons they can fly him from there- I didnt think they had an airport in OHAKUNE!!! LOL!

LOL they don't have an airport in Ohakune! They don't have much of anything in Ohakune! The company MIGHT (big might) be able to fly him from Waiouru though... not sure. Waiouru is only 25 minutes drive away from Ohakune, and as its a military base I know they have an airstrip but I'm not sure they do civilian flights from there.
