Kyle has had a cough since yesterday but worse today and now tonight it has woken him a couple of times. When he coughs it sounds like the phlegm is stuck and must be painful as he cries about it and then sounds really raspy. He's a bit rattly sounding when he breathes. Is there anything I can do to help him out. He is back asleep now and have the angelcare monitor going and keep going to check on him too. Although he's raspy he isn't struggling to breathe.

Am thinking we probably need to the doc but not sure whether to take him to 24 hour clinic or a & e tonight (is in town and would have to get DH home from work which would be 45 mins then another 40mins into town as don't want to get Spencer up as he is also sick but doesn't have the cough....yet) or wait till tomorrow. Am also not keen to get caught up in the whole swine flu debacle either as with a runny nose and cough he will probably be considered a suspect.

Hey - sounds like what grace had a couple of weeks ago and i ended up taking her to the doctors. After they ruled out pneumonia they said it was bronchitis and viral and no drugs would fix it. They said to use a vaporiser which we had been doing and keep elevated at night. I also put baby balsam on her feet and a little on her chest. It took about 7 days and then eased and disapeared. It sounded terrible like a rattley chest and a horrid cough like she had been smoking a packet of ciggies! You will know what to do just trust your instincts. Hope he is better soon

That sound like what Alex had last week, we took him to the docs and all he gave us was saline drops to help with congestion, it took alittle over a week to clear

He didn't get any worse overnight, he was up a bit with it but that was to be expected. He doesn't sound too bad at all this morning so I can't decide whether to go to the docs or not. I might just for peace of mind.

Yeah I think a trip to the doctors is probably a good idea even as you say just to ease your mind.

I hope Kyle is feeling better. Rhys has had broncholitis for the last week and a half and we elevate his cot, and gave him time in a steamy bathroom too. We spend last monday night at the hospital after he had very fast breathing and a temp of 38.2 and was told there was nothing they could do as, same as mentioned above, it's viral and it's just a matter of time. We took Rhys to the gp during the week for further checkups too, for peace of mind, as at least they can take oxygen level stats and that is very reassuring
I think the illnesses aren't helped with this awful grey depressing winter we've had here in Christchurch this year!

Yeah we're off to the docs in about an hour. I think they will just say it's a cough wait it out, but will feel better once they have had a listen. He isn't getting upset about it this morning so i don't think it is hurting him anymore. So far no temp either so that is good.

I think one of the main things to check is that their ribs arent getting sucked in when they breath. They should go out (as the lungs expand) but when they are having to use muscles to try and breathe they actually go in. That was what the doc told me when Tom had croup and it was the scariest sounding cough.

But, raise the cot, steamy bathroom (even out in the cold) where all the things we were recommended.

Sounds a lot like DH's cough so it is probably just the common cold. I would expect him to be unwell if it was swine flu

No I don't think he has swine flu...lol... I was just worried that they would send us to the swine flu centre in chch as he has symptoms that could be flu, but it's ok just gonna see the locum at our medical centre.

Yep raised the cot and that seemed to help. Good to know about the rib thing will remember that.
