Hi Ladies,

For those of us that put lumps in water, i'd love to hear your recipies for solids for bubs starting out.

I know the general gist about not adding anything and storage etc but I can't make a peanut butter sandwhich without a recipie and step by step instructions lol. I baked a cake a while ago and it spent two hours in the oven and wouldn't cook!!!! DH does the cooking in our house or we'd all starve

So what do you use and how much of each thing do you put in? I have one of the wizzy machiney thingees so I can make it into a puree. Just curious to know what vegies have the best nutrition for bubs and if there are any that are best avoided for one so young. I wont put onions in obviously lol.

So far I've done apples, pears & pumpkin & something else which I can't remember!!

On the watties website there is a recipe to make apples so I just used that & swapped around the ingredients. Linky

for pumpkin I just added more water in the cooking.

I have done steamed carrots and then pureed them, baked pumpkin and kumara and pureed or mashed them. Boiled up apples or pears and pureed them.

With the carrots I just peeled them and cut them up quite small, put them in the steamer on top of some boiling water, wait till they are soft and then let them cool and then puree them.

With the pumpkin and kumara I just wrapped them in tinfoil separately and baked them in the oven on approx 180 until they were soft (the kumara was still in the skin and the pumpkin was just a big piece with the skin still on) once they were done I let them cool and then scooped out the good stuff and mashed or pureed it together. Sometimes I put a bit of milk (breast or formula) in with it just before I give it to DD just so its smoother. They say its best to bake the pumpkin & kumara as it keeps all the goodness in.

With the apples or pears I peel say 2 to 3 of either and chopped them up (taking the cores out of course) and then put them in a pot with a little water and boil them up until they are soft, let them cool and then puree them.

Once when DD was constipated I put a prune in with the pears while they boiled so that the juice from the prune was mixed in and then just took the prune out before I pureed them seem to help with her constipation.

I hope that is of some help.

I'll just give you some of my starter recipes, very basic and first foods. All of my "recipes" are mashed with the liquid from cooking , if I've got to much liquid I save it as vege stock.

1/4 pumpkin and 2 carrots, enough water to just cover, boil until carrots are tender. Mash roughly then push through sieve.

1 large kumara and 1 potato, water to cover, boil until soft them mash well.

1 kumara, 2 apples, peeled and chopped and cored, 300gm good quality trim mince, a cup of water, simmer for about 45 minutes stirring freqeuntly until it starts to thicken.

1/4 pumpkin and 2 apples with enough water to cover, boil and mash.

Banana and avacado mash, no cooking required!

Half a head of brocolli, 1 potato, 1 carrot. Place carrot and potato in pot with enough water to cover and turn onto high boil, chop brocolli and remove stalks, place on top. Cook until root veges are soft.

That's just a few of the combo's, I have heaps. If baby needs a fine puree push through a sieve or use a blender, if you're starting texture mash with a fork, and if you're doing lumps just use the family potato masher.

Avocados great, not too hard to prepare and it is one of Brennans favourite foods.

Otherwise the normal carrots, potato, pumpkin, kumara, apple and pear as above

If you want to thicken up fruit purees you can add a little bit of baby rice to them as well
