I am interested to hear peoples thoughts on our current deliberation.

Next week my wife has her sister coming from MELBOURNE to see our new addition to teh family. He will be 23 days old.

With all the news about swine flu in the media and the epidemic status in Aussie should we be worried about her potentially exposing our lil boy to this flu.

And if he gets exposed what are the risks, are they higher for new borns than others?? Should we be erring on the side of caution and saying sorry but you can't see him because.....

Does anyone have any info or thoughts to help.

It's no worse then if you went to the supermarket and bubs caught the flu there. I wouldn't worry, our border patrol's pretty on to it and if they have any doubt over somebody having a dose of H1N1 they stop them and have them tested.

i study biomedical science and one of my lecturers were saying that the number of people ending up with swine flu, and dying of swine flu is currently the same as the normal flu virus. the media amp things up so people are more cautious which is all good, but statistically speaking it is no more than the flu you would pick up from the boy next door. at the end of the day though if you are worried it is totally your call and you have to do what you think is right for bubs

Newborns usually are pretty well covered for bugs through the mother's milk. I'd take usual flu precautions, as in if your SIL is coughing or not feeling well, keep her at a distance.
