It is normal for it to appear that supply decreases in the evening, as this is when infants normally cluster feed. They are getting to the fatty hindmilk, which helps satisfy their hunger. You do have enough milk. I know it maybe annoying, but planting yourself on the couch for an hour or so is the best thing to do.
Don't resort to a formula top-up, as that will actually cause your supply to decrease. Allow baby as much time on the breast, as it can take up to a week for supply to increase. Breastfeeding is a supply/demand response, and the demand helps increase prolactin levels in the body.
Some tips on increasing supply are:
- eating porridge in the morning. There has been research to suggest that foods that naturally lower cholesterol levels (such as oats) has an effect on increasing supply.
- drinking too much water can actually decrease supply. Just stick to the 6 to 8 glasses of fluids a day, and remember that fluid in food counts as well.
- try breast compressions to help facilitate more flow whilst baby is feeding.
- try homeopathic remedies, as some mums have success with these.
I would highly suggest looking at the kellymom website for tips and advice on increasing supply.
Hope that helps, and keep up the good work on breastfeeding
