Hi everyone,
Its probably already been answered but I can't seem to find anything in the search...
I'm thinking of starting Lily on formula - as well as breastfeeding - how much should I give her and what feed is a good time to give her?
The same goes with solids! - I know they say feed her after a breastfeed - but what time of the day is best?!

Also - what is the difference between all these formula's? I was in the supermarket today trying to work out all the differences between brands and what does GOLD mean?

GOLD formula has extra stuff in it (cant recall exactly what off hand) but it is very rich and as a result most babies get constipated on it. I'd stay away from GOLD if i were you.

As for amounts, check the tins. Probably about 180mls although she'd probably take less to start off. Try her on it in the morning so you can see if she has a reaction to it.

Solids - best to try her at a mid morning or midday feed again so you can see if she reacts to it.

I haven't used GOLD, main reason it's way more expensive than the normal one, and I figure that MOH guidelines will ensure the basic formula has everything that the baby actually needs.

I started with one feed a day as the dreamfeed, between 150 and 200ml depending on what Daniel wanted. He did get constipated at first, but it settled down. He's now fully FF and I wouldn't describe him as constipated!

Solids - I started at lunchtime. I started with the watties canned stuff cos it was easy and was really liquid. As Daniel got hungrier, I started making my own stuff.

ETA - they say only do 2-3 tsp for the first meal - go with the baby. Daniel had a whole can of stuff and hasn't slowed down!

I'd stay away from gold as well I was told by my Midwife that it can upset their tummys we tried it once and the girls brought a lot of it up. We use S26 it's what they use for newborns in the hospital and its nice and cheap. It will tell you on the cans how much to give your baby at what ages although they usually advise more than you need our girls have always drunk under about 60mls from what they advise.

We started the girls on baby rice at 4 and a half months. We started giving them a teaspoon of baby rice usually around dinner time only because DH was home then and he could be part of it. I really don't think it matters though just whenever is convineant for you.

:) Cool thanks for the advice so far!!
I actually gave Lily pumpkin and sweetcorn (Watties) yest (about 1/3 of a jar) she seemed to love it! It went everywhere as she decided to wipe her face when it was on her mouth!

So with the formula - its meant to be used within a month right? Do you think I should just wait until shes 6 months and use the next stage one or can I use the newborn one for a couple of months now (shes 5 months now!)

I'd say use the stage one to start offf with as the stage to has heaps of extra stuff in it and it might be more harsher on her tummy.
You can get formula in sachets karicare and nurture does, But i highly recommend s26 its cheaper than both of those and is heaps nicer than the nurture, and lots of ppl on here can say than too.

Congrates on #2.

Dont go near the GOLD ones, *most* babies get sore tummys when they drink those ones.

We found the best formula for the plain S26, Caden never had any probs on it at all, on all the other oens he did.
