For a newborn (8days old) fully breastfed baby what should I be doing in regards to burping her? Do I need to?

I've never been around a newborn baby before so have no idea what I need to be doing. Sometimes she's completely fine with no burping, other times she just won't settle and I have no idea if she needs burping or what's going on.

Thanks ofr any help or advice.

Hi khast, unfortunately it depends on the baby! Things like how good her latch is, how fast your letdown is, what time of day it is, how long it's been since her last feed, what positions you feed her in all make a difference.

She is likely to need to be winded though, my little guy didn't to start off with but once my milk properly came in he did, he will come off the boob in the middle of a feed needing to be burped.

When she's unsettled and you're not sure if it's wind, some of the tell-tale signs are pulling her legs up towards her chest, and an "eh" sound in her cry.

Some techniques are hold her over your shoulder, with her tummy up against your shoulder (ie quite high) and pat the back; sit her on your knee, hold her head up with one hand and pat her back with your other hand (that's the most reliable for me, but normally I'm only getting burps about 50% of the time, even when he seems really windy). Other technique - put her on your knees face down and pat her back. Often moving helps - lifting arms up or just changing from one burp position to another can sometimes trigger a burp that's not wanting to come out! I tend to try for a couple of minutes and if nothing comes out, then leave it. My MW said it he's relaxed at the end of the feed - arms relaxed, tongue at bottom of the mouth, then there's probably no need to burp him.

Oh, and if you want to see techniques in action, YouTube is wonderful!

Also, don't beat yourself up if she doesn't burp - sometimes they're just stubborn and won't burp even if they need to, and sometimes they just don't need to.

Rubbing their back in a circlular motion puts less pressure on there wee stomachs than patting, and is just as effective. I also found the position where baby sits up like flissty discribed, the most effective. When they are sitting up like that put their feet together (like Budha), and that alsohelps bring the wind up!

I have always sat caden on my knee and I lean him forward a bit and pat his back and rub it in circles and up and down, just pat lightly though, or pat their bottom.
Or I put him over my shoulder.

It depends on the baby really, but its always good to try and burp them after each feed, just in case, sometimes caden does tiny little burps but it all helps, and sometimes he does huge massive ones and I wonder how something so big can come of something so little lol

I've burped all of mine over my shoulder and it seems to work OK, altho none of my girls have ever had much trouble with wind. I was reading on the MIracle Blanket site yesterday that a firm swaddle can help trapped wind, I never knew that but I've always swaddled my babies quite tightly so maybe that's why they never had much wind?

i always burped my kids after feeding, but sometimes they never brought any wind up.   charli didn't seem to have as much wind as jack. usually over the shoulder or on my knee worked best. even just holding them upright after a feed for a few minutes helps

I used to just hold Luke on my knee sitting up with hand under chin and rub his back.  It usually worked within a few minutes.

They had a thing on good morning the other week of a "No fail" technique. it hasnt been completely no fail for us but has been definitely better than just patting or rubbing.
Leave him lying on your legs for 30 or so seconds to rest the air bubble, then gently kneed his tummy 2 -3 times like bread to loosen the bubble, lift him up holding him in front of you for a couple of seconds to balance it, then sit them on your knee, supporting his chin with your hand and pat few times. We get some whoppers out of her now, its great. Ali doesnt settle well if shes not burped or will wake after 20 mins and cry. i sometimes have to do it 2 times but it is pretty effective.
It definitely depends on the baby to how long you burp them for too, i think i stopped when my boy was 6 months, im not sure about anyone else though.

i read an article the other day about baby burping.

They said after feeding baby lie them flat and rub their tum for a few seconds, then pick them up under armpits to strech them out, then put on knee with hand on their top chest and rub between sholder blades.
I do this with my 4 month old nephew and he burps within a few seconds of rubbing his back! Perfect
