Topic: Sleep!!! Posted: 11 April 2008 at 9:26am |
Hi
I have a 3 and half month old boy. Between the ages of 7 and 12 weeks Daniel was sleeping really well through the night - usually between 8-10 hours. About 3 weeks ago he started to wake in the middle of the night for an extra feed. He doesn't always sleep so well during the day but I didn't get too worried because he was sleeping well at night. Now though I'm not sure what's happening and I do get a bit worried because his day sleeps haven't really improved. Has anyone else had this experience? Does anyone have any tips for getting him back to sleeping through the night? Am I just being a bit selfish in missing my full night's sleep??
Thanks
Philippa

I'm probably not going to be much help, but I'll share my experiences!
My Coop did 4 nights of sleeping thru in a row when he was about 4.5 months old and I got sooooo excited. THEN he got a gastro bug, then an ear infection, then we went overseas on holiday. All attributed to his now shocking sleeping habits!!!! He wakes on average 3 times from 7pm till 6am. Not cool!!
I'm trying really hard to break the habbit he's gotten into, but it's not that easy when I'm soooo tired! And being almost 8 months, he should be able to sleep thru.
He may still need a middle of the night feed to keep him going being only 3.5 months old. Or a dream feed at around 11pm.
During the day Coop has just gone back to having 3 naps, each of about 1.5 hours long. I find that that is helping iwith settling him at bedtime.
Probably no help But just wanted to let you know I'm there too!

At that age I found that the day sleeps really affected his nights sleeps, so maybe work on getting the day sleeps going well so he doesn't get over tired then perhaps night sleeps will return! fingers crossed!

I'm beginning to wonder if babies EVER permanently sleep thru! This is probably not much help to you, but just so you're warned .... my boy sleeps thru most of the time and has done since 12 weeks (was very sick before then, but thats another story), but he started waking again for growth spurts, needing solids, sore tum after starting solids, teething, travelling, colds .....
And so it goes on .... developmental milestones like crawling / walking can disrupt sleeping patterns too. He has always gone back to sleeping thru, but if he isn't eating well (teething or sick) he seems to wake hungry very early in the morning again for a couple of nights. There are 12 babies in my coffee group, aged 9-10 months and most were great sleepers at 2-4 months, but now I'd say half are waking for at least one feed all the time and most of the others wake if they're not well / teething / away from home!
So hang in there ... he'll probably sleep thru again soon ... til the next thing ....

PS - I'd try giving him a dream feed if you're not already.

Thanks for all your advice. We had been doing a feed between 9-10pm but because he was sleeping through we decided to drop it and see what happened. It was ok for the first night but only for the first night! We've started doing that feed again, but so far he's still waking. I guess there is really no rhyme or reason. I have started wondering about teething, but is it too early??
Thanks again

No help from here either, except to let you know that you're not alone. My lad's never been a great day sleeper, and we're back to waking up during the night again as well. He is a tad older than Daniel, so I can try a couple of other things, but hang in there, and try to catch up on your sleep when you can

Could be teething- Ella started teething around 3 months, but the tooth didn't actually pop up until she was 6 months. We have found that when she is teething it is normally just getting her to so to sleep at night which is the problem (which we never normally have a prob with) and if she wakes up in the night because of the pain she is normally crying quite differently to when she wants a feed.
I have to agree with Nikki- I am starting to wonder as well if I will ever get a decent nights sleep. By the time she was 3 months Ella was sleeping through, then had a growth spurt and starting waking for a feed....and now at 9 1/2 months is STILL waking several times in the night for a feed. So I feel your pain and I know how tiring it can get.

It could be a growth spurt - just keep up the dreamfeed, or do it a bit later if you can, and he should settle back down in a few days.
Yep, teething can start that early, but you'd probably notice him more irritable / dribbly etc during the day too.

I am sorry, what is sleeping through?! I am excited because Jack only woke twice last night and I got 4 straight hours of sleep!
I can't be much help as Jack has never been a very good day or night sleeper. We have always had at least a few wake ups at night and until recently all day sleeps were no more than 45 mins. As others have mentioned milestones, teething, illness etc often affect their sleeping. For us at the moment it is yet more teeth!

We had about 3 weeks of sleeping through then 3 months without one from around 4 months. Now she is sleeping through, but still needs a dream feed to get there.
3 1/2 months is really young to sleep through consistently, one wake up is pretty normal, not that that helps much when you are hanging for a good nights sleep!

Hi gals, a bit of fun reading in here. Sleep deprivation has got to be the cruelest part about having kids I think. If you get sleep you can cope with anything soo much better. This may either make you feel better that there's other people out there with similar problems or worse at the idea of how long it can go on for. Between my 3 1/2 yr old and 2yr old I get up at least once a night to one of them for one reason or another. And to make life even more interesting I'm due to have number 3 bad sleeper in 4 weeks..eek!! I have done all the research, attended all the baby courses, watched dvds on sleeping babies etc etc but there seems to always be something that throws one or the other out, you do get used to it but still sometimes it really gets you down.

It's one of those things that can stop and start. At 3 1/2 mos he is likely to be having a growth spurt and you can expect it again in another month's time too - at which time I like to start solids.
