Topic: Giving Gaviscon Posted: 19 February 2008 at 9:16am |
Hi there, just wondering how those of you who had to give your baby gaviscon actually got your baby to take it? My wee guy is 6 weeks old and 5.7kg therefore we have to give him 2 sachets after each feed. We tried for the first time this morning using a bottle ( he does take the bottle with EBM) but he gagged and then chucked up the gaviscon plus a whole lot of milk. We tried a few times and same thing.
So question is how on earth am I supposed to get it into him?? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thankyou

I mixed it up in a little container (if you shake it it mixes quicker than stirring). Kate took it better if mixed with EBM which was warm. Over time you can gradually add more cooled boiled water and eventually he may take it mixed with just water. I gave it to her in a syringe- lay her on her change table and squirted about 0.2mls each squirt (so she didn't spit it back out) into the side of her mouth. It usually took about 10 minutes to do but it meant she got it all in and kept it all down.
It ended up being quite a nice time. I spent it talking to her and trying to make her smile- if I tried to do it any other way or quickly then it just wound up an awful screaming match, often with us both in tears!
Good luck!

You could try giving it to him on a spoon - I've managed this sucessfully once with gaviscon - but it takes ages with so much to give.

We use to mix the gaviscon with 30mls breast milk and 20 mls of water in a bottle. If we made it any more dilute he didn't want a bar of it but with that much liquid he didn't notice and drank it really easily every time.
Syringe never worked for us, a dropper was slightly more successful but the bottle was the easiest and most efficient.

Isla was older when she started on it. After much trial and error, the best way we found was the 2 sachets mixed with 15 mls cooled boiled water into a smooth paste, then put in the side of her mouth usuing a large(10ml I think) dropper that I brought from a chemist for about $2.
We found it was more useful given immediatly before feeds, rather than after.

Thankyou for the advice everyone. Will try using a syringe today and see how we go. Have got some into him mixing with brestmilk in bottle but he takes so long to drink it and gets sleepy then not BF properly.
My next question is can you make up the whole days worth in the morning or do you have to make it up as you go? I am struggling to see how I am going to be able to make it up 6 times a day when he is screaming to be fed and I have a toddler running around??

Yes unfortuantley you have to make it up straight before u give it. If u got it turns into cement! Truely!
I just used to have little plastic bowls with lids, and would open 2 sachets into each bowl in the evening, for the next day. I would then keep boiled water in a bottle next to it, and spoons etc all set up, so when I actually needed to do it, it was as ready as possible.
I had a seperate set of stuff for when we went out. Did get some funny looks out in public mixing up a white powder to give to my baby! Lol!
You do get used to it. I gave Isla 6 lots a day for 6 months (plus Ranitidine twice a day), and then luckily she grew out of it!

Yeah- its a pain but you come up with little systems to make it easier. I gave it after her feed (got conflicting advice on when to give it from the 3 different paeds we went too! not to mention the pharmacist... ) and it worked just as well for us as giving it before- although its not the same for everyone. Theres no way she would have put up with waiting for her feed while I mixed it up!
Kate was on the 6 doses of gaviscon, 2 of ranitidine and 2 of lactulose (because of the constipation from the gaviscon), I wonder how she even fit feeds in that poor tiny little tum
Good luck with it all!

Yeah Jen- thats how we used to feel,...so many medicines for such a wee thing. Was even worse when she got sick and she had to have pamol and antibiotics on top of the rest.
Isla had problems with constipation, but fortunatly they werent ongoing, once she was having 3 meals of solids, and we could get prune juice/apple puree etc into her!

Thanks so much you ladies are gems! Right I need to go get myself all set up then, so grateful to the advice you get on this forum.
I'm not completely convinced he has reflux but there is some problem and I am prepared to give gaviscon a go if it means he will be able to settle to sleep as I am exhausted at the moment. Heading to our local Karitane centre next week so hopefully they will be able to help shed some light on the situation.
Thanks again

Glad that you are getting some help. Karitane Centre should be really helpful. We ended up going all the way to Auck to a Plunket Family Centre there get help when Isla was still unsettled/screaming/ feeding less than 3 mins a feed and sleeping less than 2 hrs at a time day or night, at nearly 5 months.
We had seen 3 Dr's, 2 plunket nurses, 2 midwives and been to the Mothercraft Unit at Waikato Hospital for a week- and kept being told she didnt have reflux cos she didnt spill at all, and that she was healthy and just an unsettled baby.
The nurses at the family centre really listened to all my concerns, and 2 nurses on 2 different both thought she had reflux,...so eventually she was tried on Gaviscon, and within a few doses she was like a different baby!
It was only the beginning of a new road for us,...which involved Paeds, other meds,...alergies, excema,..etc,...but just thought I would share a little of our journey!
Feel free to keep asking questions. Oh baby is a great place!
