Spencer is on neocate cos of suspected allergy to cows milk protein once we made the swap his constipation stopped and he now poos like a trooper once a day and he no longer fusses at feeds etc. He does however still puke as much if not more although is never upset about sicking, he will actually quite often laugh and be sick at the same time.

His ezcema had started to clear up really nicely but today it has come back with avengence its on his face behind both ears in his armpits and in one elbow crease and the back of one knee, the dry patches have reappered on his legs and his face has got spotty/rashy again. I found him this morning with scratches all over his forehead and he keeps trying to scratch the top of his head. The only thing I can think that he has had that is slightly different to normal is parsnip which I intoduced last week.

Would it take that long for a reaction to happen?

If I cut it out of his diet how quickly should it clear up if that was the culprit?

Has anyone ever heard of being allergic to parsnip?

or is it possible for them to just get irritated by certain foods without it necessarily being an allergy?

You can pretty much be allergic/sensitive to any food, but if you only gave it to him once last week it seems like a very delayed reaction. If you introduced it last week and he's had it a few times since then, then that could be the problem. You could try not giving it to him and wait until his skin clears, then give it to him again and see if he gets rashy again. If the eczema doesnt clear from removing it then its probably something else. Does that make sense?! And yeah some things can cause a reaction without being strictly 'allergic' to them (if there is an immune response then its allergy, which you can tell from tests.)

It could also be something environmental that he's come into contact with - animals, dust, products etc. Sunscreen?

Hope it clears up soon. Have you got nice 100% cotton clothes for him? Oh and this issue of Allergy Today (only came out last week) has heaps about dealing with eczema in it - I think you can get it at some bookshops if you arent already a member of Allergy NZ.

I had similar concerns about Samantha's ezcema in relation to certain foods. However when I spoke to the doctor about this he said it is very unlikely. Apparently Ezcema is more likely to be seasonal (weather) related than food related.
The only other thing is have you changed washing powders or soaps etc?

I can sympathise. I had thought I had Sam's under control and the last few days it is back with a venegence!

Edited to add: I forgot to say, the doctor also said that a food allergy is more likely to come up as a rash around the mouth or on the tummy and back.
Hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks guys, he has had the parsnip a few times since I introduced it so I will take it out again for a while. Use ecostore only on his clothes and nappies and most of his clothes are 100% cotton, have been really careful about him not overheating and haven't used sunscreen. Don't use soap just use aqueous cream as recommended by paed.
With the ezcema last time he was very rashy on his back and tummy but that cleared up when he went on the neocate so maybe this is just a skin reaction rather than an allergy.

phew......just when you think it is under control Will keep having a think see if I can remember anything he may have come in contact with that was new.

I think tho that as Spencer has other issues with food, it *could* be food related. There are heaps of kiddies in our allergy group that have food related eczema, as well as environmental too. If its a true allergy (immune response) then they will get rashy/hivey on the face etc, but they can still definitely get very rashy from food, esp if there is a history of it.

Yeah his face is rashy kind of across his temple and down his cheeks, think we might need to go back to the paed and get him tested. Are they able to test for allergies this young? I seem to remember something about in not being accurate till they are 12+ months but I might have imagined it.
He definately had ezcema from the cows milk as he was fine when breastfed and it had mostly cleared up on the neocate just a stubborn patch behind his knee, until this morning and now it is as bad if not worse than it was before just the rash isn't on his back and tummy like it was on the standard formula.
