Topic: How Do You Take A Urine Sample (TMI) Posted: 04 June 2008 at 7:37pm |
from an untrained 2.5 year old??
Poor Lucy is sick and the doctors think that she has an urinery tract infection and we are at our wits end trying for her to use the potty but it's too hard for her!
The doctor gave her this thing to put in her nappy, but that didn't work, so we are trying it again tonight. The poor wee mite, she screams and cries when you put in on, it's sad but we have to do it

Awww, big hugs to poor Lucy UTI's suck!
The bag in the nappy is the only other way to do it but it is really tricky and the results are notoriously inaccurate.
The only alternative is a catheter urine sample and trust me, you do NOT want to go there unless you absolutely have to!

Is that the bag that you have to stick to them? Daniel has had them a couple of times, he doesn't like the part when you take it off
Sorry I don't have any ideas for you

I take it that the thing is a urine bag?
Little girls are realllly hard to get those things to work well on as they tend to get leaks really easy. The main thing to remember is once you take the tape off the back to expose the sticky layer, fold it backwards in half (how it probably was folded in originally anyway) Make sure the area is clean and dry, put the bottom piece on first making sure the fold sits right on the perineum and make sure it seals well - this is where it most often will leak from. Then pull the sides out and make sure they stick well around the area without pulling skin etc and seal around well.
Double the bag around downwards not upwards, again as this will cause it to leak otherwise.
I always find these really annoying on little girls, boys are sooo much easier.
The other thing you could do, which you may, or may not be up for.... Is have a good towel underneath her, go in while she's asleep, undo her nappy and hold the pottle there and wait for her to pee... however i am guessing really that you'll need the sample sometime around when the docs are open, so maybe during a day sleep? Seems drastic but sometimes easier... also depends on how long you plan to sit there for. lol
I do think you can then store the pottle in the fridge for a short time till you can get to the docs/lab to get it tested. (you might wanna put it in a plastic baggy if you do that, lol)
good luck, have been there done that, it's soooo not fun.

Will she just sit on the Potty?? Could you have her just sit on it and read her stories or watch telly or something until she pees????
I have never had to get a sample, but thats what I did when i was toilet training.
Might be a bit of naive idea.
Good luck!

Can you let her run around bare-bott for the morning and run with a pee bottle when she starts to pee? Just an idea, I've never had to do this before either, I imagine your stress about it could easily make her think NO WAY! Hope you manage to get it sorted!

Blah I hate those bags! The one and only time I managed to get one on Ashleigh and actually catch some urine, she poo'd at the same time So I have always asked the nurse or lady at the lab to put it on for me!

Ditto all the above... and make sure you clean her really well before putting the bag on. At the hospital they use alcohol wipes even. Also I found putting it on when baby is awake and moving about better than when she's sleeping, as you can check it more often and you don't want to leave it too long - and if she's standing, less likely to leak.

Hi Lisha - hey I had to collect one off Ella this morning, and after 3 trips to the Doc's over the last 2 days, my regular GP gave me some good advice about it - to avoid contamination in the sample (which you're guaranteed to have with those bags), try sitting the child on a very clean potty after a big drink, wait it out and see if you can 'collect' some that way. It gives you a much clearer sample.
