Topic: Can anyone help me with info? Posted: 20 January 2006 at 10:01am |
I have just found out that one of my little brothers is in starship hospital. He is 11 years old & they think he has arthritis. I always thought of arthritis as an old peoples problem so I was pretty shocked to hear that it is very likely that this is what he has. Does anyone know where I can find any info or have some direct info for me about arthritis in children? I'm hoping to go visit him this afternoon, whether he is still at Starship or at home. I'm really upset because he has been in Starship for 3 days & nobody told me at all. My poor mum has been spending all hours at starship when she hasn't been at work. So hoping I will be able to help out with looking after the other 4 kids :-(

Google is the best thing I have found for searching for stuff. Just be specific with your search topic and you should be able to come up with a few sites. Not that it helps but I have had it in my ankle since I was 16 due to many injuries that I had.
As an aside my sister in law is a nurse there, and she and others there are great at what they do and will take good care of him

The arthritis foundation was great when my nana first got arthritis, they have alot of information on it and it was easy to understand info not the stuff with big words.

my best friend is 20 and has had arthritis since she was six.She had a hip operation when she was 13 and is tiny. Its a really vicious condition cos it affects ur self esteem alot.Even tho my friend is sooo pretty she feels like noone would like her cos shes so skinny-and shes embarrassed bout her wrists and fingers so she wears long cutoff arm band type things dat she makes-shes very creative lol. When we were at school shed have alot of time off cos her joints would flare up in the colder weather, obviously running is difficult as is walking long distances-were stil gonna walk to the top of mt egmont one day tho.
Also she cant really bend her knees so when she gets out of cars off chairs etc,i pull her up-its like second nature.
But the main thing ive learnt from our friendship -apart from how strong amazing and loyal she is and how much i love her is that kids with arthritis do already feel different-they have mirrors, but in the mind where it counts theyre just like u and me.
Her dad is one of the main whatchamacallits of the arthritis foundation-i think he still is anyway-i could ring rach when i log out if u like and let u know then u could pm me and i could give u his number...he knows a lot about it
Hope that helps

I hope your brother is doing well! How worrying!
My two cents: Watch what you find on the internet - it only ever seems to be the 'worst case scenario'. When Maya was diagnosed with Infantile Fibromatosis her specialist even told me not to look it up online because there is so much info and it is hard to know what is true/exaggerated, and we just make ourselves even crazier.

Hi everyone. I didn't go to see my brother. He is at home and definitely not wanting visitors "oogling" him apparently. Hoping the swelling goes down before school starts, I think its been very hard for him, he is normally such an active kid, doing rugby & motorcross & soccer. I did have a look on the net but I don't know what kind of arthritis they think it might be (they aren't 100% sure thats what it is anyway) and it was very scary some of the things that I read on the net so I think I will avoid that from now on, I will just wait for updates from my mum I think.
Thanks everyone for advice etc. I just hope that the doctors are wrong with their diagnosis!

I've had rheumatoid arthritis since I turned 30 (am now 34). When I first got it, it was very painful so I saw a specialist straight away and I've found with the medication I take I actually forget I have arthritis as the medication is so effective...so fingers crossed that once they start your brother on his medication it will help alot with the pain.
