I'd really appreciate all the advice I can get regarding what I need to do before, when and after I move into the new house. I've practically been wrapped up in cotton wool all my life and have no clue, I'm finally breaking free from Daddy dearest (currently without his support too but hey his loss) ...I have no idea where to start.

I know I need to set up a budget, sort out stuff with WINZ, look into Power, Water & Phone bonds/set ups (no idea what I'm meant to do regarding those? ...hmm what else?

What are the main things i'll need for the place, at this point I have everything needed for the kitchen (minus the fridge but ill get that sorted once we're there and it can be delivered).

Going to go without the washing machine and couch until the big new years sales so I can get better deals, I'll just handwash everything and sit at his baby table for meals

So yeah, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Things I need to be aware of, things I need to get, need to sort etc.

Thank you ladies!

With your power and phone set up, try and get it set up for the day BEFORE you move in, just so that if there are any problems with doing it, you're not stuck on your first day there with no power/phone. Usually with the bonds, they include it in the first bill, so if you can, try and set up automatic payments to start straight away (as in, the week after you move) so that you're not paying the bills in arrears - when you call the companies to set up the account, ask them to send you out an AP/DD form to your current address so that you canget it all sorted, and also ask them for your customer or account number - as you will need it to set up the payments, and otherwise you may not get it until your first bill.

Ummm.....good luck, is mainly all I can say!!

That's really good advice minik8.
Are you ok for towels and sheets etc? You could ask people to give you that kind of stuff, or Farmers/Briscoes vouchers for Christmas.
We have an old but still ok round table and 4 chairs that I am trying to get rid of that you might be able to have. (free) I can let you know by Saturday, if you're interested?
Good luck Steph, how exciting!!

As long as you have the basic furniture, once you are on there you will then know what you need or don't need.

You definately should get the power and phone sorted prior to moving in. Especially this time of year you just don't know if there will be any delays.

We find paying a certain amount each week by AP to the power and phone is really good. That way you don't get a bill each month that you have to pay in one lump sum as it is already (or mostly) paid.

Phone (and Internet) & Power you will need to set up.

Water will come via your landlord (if you have a seperate water meter)

Also you should look into contents insurance as you arent covered by the landlords insurance should the house burn down - not that it will BYKWIM

Oh and tell the bank and anyone else you may have an account with that you are moving

Oh and because I cant be arsed editing ..

If you dont have a seperate water meter you wont be billed for your water.

Most properties have them though .. only older properties that have been converted into flats sometimes dont.

re: the power, check out Powerswitch to find out where you get the best deal. Also some power companies i.e. Genesis Energy, give you discounts if you pay your bill in certain ways. I.e. you will get a 10% discount if you pay your bill with direct debit (a fixed amount weekly/fortnightly/monthly) vs automatic payment.

Good luck with the move

I agree re. the contents insurance. Even just $10,000 of basic cover (even if it doesn't cover accidental damage, but does cover fire, theft, storm damage etc) is worth it, and as Julia said, if anything happened to the house due to your actions (not that it will, of course!!!) you wouldn't be left with a huge bill. It should only cost $5-10 a week for minimal cover, but is some protection.

Ooo exciting Steph! Congrats!!

Yep I second about putting an auto payment each week through to power, phone etc. Also shop around with phone/internet to get the best deal. We're with orcon and have the phoneline and internet combined, I forget how much but it worked out alot cheaper having them through the same company.

If the table and chairs from Mel doesn't come through and you still need some, we have an old but still good rectangle table and 4 chairs you can have (free) - or anyone else on here, if Steph doesn't want it, it's up for offers!

Also we're probably selling our fridge if you wanted to buy it. Just over 2 years old, really good condition, just selling so we can get a bigger one. It was big enough when there was just 2 of us, but Harry takes up a surprising amount of fridge/freezer space! It would be heaps big enough for you and Lucas. It's like this one here.   Just let me know if you're interested, we could deliver it. ETA: It has the freezer at the bottom and the fridge at the top. The usual shelves, vege bin, heaps of room on the door.

When do you move?

I found NZ Post's changemyaddress website really useful, as well as their movers checklists and packing worksheets. Lots of the stuff won't be relevant (ie most of the 'moving out' things) but lots will be too.

We've got a sofa bed/couch going spare that you're welcome to - we could drop it off one day when we're visiting my SIL and BIL in Puni... PM me if you want it

nother handy thing is to have a bag packed with your son's fav things in it so that when you move you don't need to rummage through boxes to get the things he can't do with out eg toy he sleeps with
