Topic: Article on rape culture *MAY TRIGGER* Posted: 12 December 2009 at 4:08pm |
From the NZ Herald:

NZ Herald wrote:
Home-knitted woollen scarves have become a new kind of "teddy bear" for South Auckland women who have been sexually abused.
The scarves help the women "when they're not doing so well late at night" explains Marama Hetaraka, crisis team leader for the Papatoetoe-based Counselling Services Centre, which distributes them.
"It makes a difference, knowing that there's someone else out there who knows what they're going through. It's like a teddy bear - a teddy bear you can wear in public without being looked at sideways."
|
The woman in the 'her story' segment is a good friend of mine - it feels like a kick to the guts every time I remember what she went through and for the most part, I had no idea... at the time she was too afraid to speak of it even to me
So, I am trying to publicise this article and her story in as many places as possible (with her permission even though it is non identifying), and I thought this would be a good place to do so.
Also, I would like to offer to be a collection point for anyone here who may want to knit a scarf for the Courageous Women's group to distribute - I am going to start on one in the next few days. It doesn't matter what kind of yarn it is made from as long as it is made with empathy and love.

WT... !? I tried fixing it but no luck, I'm wondering if it has been blocked somehow.
Here it is again, but not hyperlinked so you'd have to copy and paste it into your own browser window:

Wow. I've shared this on facebook - a brilliant article. When the police got around to taking my case seriously (9 months after the incident and nearly 9 months since they first questioned and released him), the man hung himself rather then face conviction. And I hope every single rapist rots in hell.

I can knit .. but not very well. I am half way though knitting a scarf that has taken about 2 years so complete so far. Mum will probably have to un pick it and re do it. If I ever finish it I will donate it :)
