Maybe a spit roast? Always nice when the weather turns cooler Do you have somewhere to have the party at?

We were facing the same problem between us 6 kids for my mum's 60th birthday in a few weeks. we decided to do a pay-your-own-way dinner instead.

We found a great restaurant that caters for most tastes and price ranges from about $10 for a basic meal to $25 for those wanting the whole shebang, booked it for 30-ish people, and she doesn't know about it. we have sent out invites and said time and place and that it is surprise and pay-your-own way. so far the response has been great. mum just thinks that me and mike are taking her out for dinner, she doesn't know that my brother etc from aussie are going to be there, my aunts, grandad, all her friends etc. of course we will pay for mum.

has taken the heat off us as there are only a couple of us that would be in the position to pay for something like that and the others weren't willing to do it.. stopped fights between us older ones too.

hope you find a solution. funny how these types of things can be a source of stress.

My Mum is turning 60 later this year too and we're doing the same a Janine's family.
Sending out sneaky invitations with the date and place and politely specifying that it is pay for yourself.
We're going to book a place that has a function room, if possible, and keeping it between 20-30 people (hopefully) so that Mum can get a chance to talk to everyone.
We're also going to tell a bit of a white lie and let her think its just a family dinner with us 4 kids.
Good luck with your plans Henna!

well I just spoke with Mum and she would rather that we just invite a whole heap of people and have a reunion type thing one afternoon. I think it sounds like a great idea because with the 11 of us its never been an easy task to go anywhere so will discuss it with the other sisters and see what they think. Plus she said she doesn't want a whole heap of money spent.

My mums 50th is in Nov...and I have no idea what to do. Spoke to Dad and he said he isnt keen to do any thing fancy as they are going on a 4 weeks trip to Europe and its costing them an arm and a Leg. My brother is ...well he isnt going to be much help financially so I will have to do it with Dad.

I was thinking of doing a surprise party at my place, a BBQ. Will do fancy fancy food...mainly Russian, since she is Ukrainian.

I dont know thats it really!!

We had my dad's 60th birthday in March and did it on the cheap (I think it was about $300 food and alcohol inclusive).

We had it at mum & dad's house. Mum took dad out for the afternoon and we raided our Christmas decorations for fairy lights and tinsel and bought a few Happy Birthday banners and balloons and decorated the lounge. DH sorted out a playlist on his MP3. I made & decorated the cake and we roasted lamb and chicken on the BBQ rotisserie accompanied with salads.

My mum emailed all Dad's family and friends and asked for copies of photos of him and then she bought a whole heap of scrapbooking supplies and everyone at the party were encouraged to do a scrapbook page for him.

You could do a pot luck drop-in afternoon tea, we went to one like that at the end of last year and it was really cool. It was an "any time from 2pm" kind of thing and they had a heap of chippies and cakes and drinks to start with but had asked everyone to bring a plate.

Janine, my mum is planning a similar kind of dinner (pay your way) for my dad's 50th later this year.

Failing that, if you really like organising things and have plenty of time (hahaha), I've always liked the idea of a dinner by numbers. So everyone (or every family member, however you decide to work it out), is asked to bring a big amount of a particular dish. The people working in the kitchen are the only ones who see the 'code'. All the guests are given an 'order form' at their table, they can tick up to three or four numbers that they would like, write their name and table number, and write any allergies. Then it gets taken back to the kitchen and a serve of each of the 'numbers' is served, e.g. 1=potatoes, 2=ice cream, 3=lasagne. It would take a lot of organisation and have to be done for someone with a good humour!
