Topic: Folic Acid Poisoning???? Posted: 19 March 2008 at 9:15am |
I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday about our "new" drink bottles and I happened to mention to her that I had a metallic taste in my mouth and was blaming it on my new bottle (its stainless).
She said hers was fine and that I most likely had folic acid poisoning???? I've never heard of that before and tried to google it on the internet with no results.
Anyone else heard of folic acid poisoning? She's a mum of 5 so I didn't want to sound like a newbie by questioning her

Never heard of it!
But in early pregnancy one of my weird symptoms was a metallic taste in my mouth, apparently it is quite common.
Fingers crossed that's what it is for you!

i dont have any other symptoms tho and would have thought my boobs or something else would have given me other reason to suspect i was pg
who knows? would be great if i was but will blame it on my drink bottle until i test next week
guess i shouldn't cut back on my folic acid just yet!

I do know that taking folic is dangerous if you have low B12 levels, and you should always get these checked before you start taking folic acid (they do them as part of pre-natal checks at the Dr).

I was the same as nzpiper!
I didn't get any symptoms until 6 weeks, except for a metallic taste in my mouth about a week before I got my BFP (at 4 weeks)
It tasted like I'd bitten the inside of my mouth, or had bleeding gums...
But nope...was little Hannah, doing her thing

Good luck - i am pretty sure that the body excretes the folic acid it doesn't need, so i think that folic acid poisoning is a bit of a crock.
Anyway, fingers crossed you get the result you want!

Ok, so I know that this is an old thread, but I have a related question. I'm currently TTC, and about to run out of my prescription folic acid tablets. I've been taking them since boxing day, came off the pill on Feb 7. Because its cheaper than going to the doctor for a new prescription, I've just bought some Apo-folic tablets at the chemist. On reading the enclosed leaflet, it says "it is very important to consult your doctor if you are feeling unusually tired or anaemic before starting this medicine".
The thing is that I'm absolutely bone tired at the moment, more so than I've ever been in my life. I'd put it down to renovations, and general stress, but I'm getting plenty of sleep at night and work isn't that stressful right now. So now I'm wondering if this exhaustion is caused by the folic acid in some way? Is that how it interacts with b12? My doc never asked if I was tired and didn't do any tests when I said I wanted to TTC. Actually, I had to request that she prescribe folic acid I'm not sure exactly when I became so tired, but it's been going on for several weeks now.
I'm quite the carnivore and eat plenty of red meat, so I doubt that iron is the issue. Also, I've just had AF, so I'm definitely not pregnant.
Sorry for the novel, but I'd love to hear your ideas?

T-Rex, B12 is similar to iron so your fatigue may well be due to that. I was quite low in B12 when tested about a year ago, turned out I had a food intolerance that prevented me from absorbing my nutrients as well as I ought to have. Apparently you can just go to any medlab and ask to have your iron and B12 levels tested..... I've never done it myself but if you're unsure about that, see if your nurse could do it for you.
