Ok, nothing major, but I am having to start figuring out Ayja's party for May early-ish as my mum turns 60 this year and is pretty much expecting a big party to be thrown for her, which us kids have decided that we might actually do - her birthday is the day after Ayja's.

This means we'd end up having mum's party on the saturday night and Ayja's party on the saturday during the day.. hence needing to get stuff done now, cos i imagine i'll be the one left to plan all this for mum since i'm the only one (apart from the younger blister who won't do a thing) who lives in palmy.

AAAANNYYYWAY, So after much much much deliberation, Ayja has come up with "theme" that she wants and i have no idea really.

She wants a "mask" party.

Now i already have an idea for the invites i can make, and could probably just do a few colours as a theme and hang some masks on the wall etc, but other than that I haven't a clue, what can we do? what games, how do i pull this off? I mean sure, teenagers could have like a masquarade ball type of thing but this is a 3 year old.

Mike did suggest getting plain white masks and the kids could decorate which is a neat idea but chances are this means big mess, a fair amount of adult supervision one-on-one, and the kids won't actually be able to wear them at the party if it involves paint or glitter or gluing stuff on... Paris did say we should buy some self-adhesive jewels, stars stickers etc which could be an idea.

Does anyone have any ideas.. I'm glad i still have about 12 weeks to plan it. I'm stuck.

You could do a kiddies masquarade ball. Get them to come in masks.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Well that's what i thought.

I originally thought of attaching just plain white eye masks in with the invites and they can decorate them and wear them to the party and have a prize for the best one as judged by some impartial judges, but chances are high they could get lost in the time between the invites going home and the party.

If they wore their own masks, then also high chance of someone turning up in something that Ayja would deem as scary cos she freaks out at even the animal masks at daycare.

Paris did say when we were searching the net that maybe we could have a carnivale party and make it colourful and provide some pre-decorated carnivale masks for the kids to wear and take home and that way could ensure the Ayja's not gonna freak out at her own party and spend the day sitting in my lap.

Hhhm. I like that idea actually.

Why don't you get them to make the masks when they get there? Have all the crafty things laid out and paper plates or mask templates or whatever is easiest. Then it's a party game and something they can take home all in one go.
I'm sure you could find a whole lot of mask templates and ideas for little kids on the net.
You could rent 'The Mask' or there was a cartoon series made of this movie - can't remember age appropriateness as I haven't seen it in years, possibly the movie might be a bit scary for three year olds. Maybe the Incredibles? They all wore masks.
You could do a treasure hunt with different coloured or numbered eye masks set up in different places - they have to look through the masks to see the next one/next clue?
Cool theme to pick! That's a very creative little girl you have

Snap Mazzy, you must have posted at the same time as i edited.

Yeah Ayja is in love with the incredibles, chances are her cake will end up being Jack-Jack, cos he wears a mask.

Keep the ideas coming.

You could also do face painting - good for littlies who don't want to wear a mask but who don't want to be left out either.
When I think of masquerade for kids I think puppets, clowns and for some reason pinatas? Not sure what you can enlist friends to do, but some more ideas anyway. I love planning parties!

Edited to add:
Ha! I posted again while you were doing your second post. If you do carnivale, there is HEAPS of info out there, and you can incorporate some of the stuff like heaps of beaded necklaces for the kids to run around and find and wear during the party. I think the official colours are green, purple and gold if you wanted to go with that theme.

Hannah has been to a party (5yo) where they decorated their own hats. The girls loved it. They used felt pens and stickers - so it doesn't have to be messy.

I guess then you could do fairy cakes etc.

I thought about putting on some music and dancing but is Ayja into that or only roughing and running lol

And here's the MUST: have her party one week early!!
