Topic: Waking at night for bottles (again!) Posted: 03 July 2007 at 4:12pm |
My nearly 15 month old has started waking twice in the night again, once at 12pm then again at 4am. Nothing, I repeat, nothing will settle her, except for a bottle of milk (and yes, her tummy is empty both times - the gurgle as the milk hits is amazing!).
Do I put this down to a growth spurt?
Other factors include:
She goes to day care 4 days a week and I wondered if she is not getting enough to eat/drink then
She will only feed herself dinner, I am NOT allowed to do it otherwise we have major hissy fits with no food being eaten at all
She has just got her two back molars at the top and it looks like the bottom two are coming through too
HELP! I am sooo tired, I have to get up each day at 5.30am to go to work and don't get to bed until late so I am really struggling to stay awake during the day at the moment!
Is this normal or does anyone have any ideas of what I can do with Charlotte at these times?!

Ok you need to check that she's eating enough. A lot of 15mos are not entirely keen on an evening meal but still need to eat in the afternoon so they will sleep - of course. Once that is taken care of, I actually think the reason she is waking up is because of her molars. She may be quickly developing a habit of having a bottle "dinner" in the middle of the night so be careful about that. I suspect she is just wanting comfort food/suckling because of her molars. Have you tried Pamol? My kids didn't really fuss about teeth coming through except for the molars.

We tried the Pamol thing last night at midnight but alas, she still woke up at 4am! She is really really grumpy when she does wake, usually crying and not even wanting cuddles - she starts smiling as soon as Daddy walks in with her bottle!
I thought I would give it until next week and if she is still doing it (because her molars will be even more through then) reassess the situation then.
But on saying that, I do agree in that I don't think she is eating enough, but it is sooo hard to get the food into her when she doesn't want it and doesn't want you to do it! She is very into her yoghurt at the moment and I was going to try giving her one of those after her dinner tonight just before bed as at least I know she will eat it.

Good luck! Sounds like she has her mind made up on what she wants

You've probably already tried it, but what about a bottle of water? I don't offer my girls formula if they wake at night any more coz I remember how hard it was to break Maya of the habit. So I give them a drink of water from the bottle and put them back to bed and they usually settle pretty quickly.
Teresa is probably right about the molars too tho, so Pamol might be a good idea too, and/or Bonjela. I keep a tube next to the bed and jam it in the gremlins mouths if/when they wake during the ight.

Random thought - don't forget that if need be you can give doses of Pamol four hours apart, although I forget what the restriction is on the number of doses in a 24 hour period, maybe six !?
