At the end of the day Kakapo, I cant see your sons head flattening and to what degree it is. Whether I thought it was no cause for concern or not if it is for you then get it check out. You said it hasnt shown any signs of improvement so that is another reason for a trip to the GP. At his age is when even slight improvements should be noticeable. He may even just end up being checked by GP in another few months. There definitely are alot of babies with flattening that is completely normal  and will self correct as baby gets older. We will also encourage more tummytime and alternating the sides the head turns to at each sleep, but then there are flattenings that are a problem and need to be checked out. I check between 9-15 babies head per day 4days  a week so I get to check a whole lot of heads and it is a very common problem.

I must admit, when I had Maya I took the Plunket nurses words as gospel pretty much, but the more kids I have the more I've learnt to take what I want from her and leave the rest coz some of the things she says are a bit old school. But I her so much I nominated her for the Plunket awards that Watties or someone run each year and she won it for Auckland in '04.

Kels - the thing they checked Mercedes for was a torticullis (sp?), does that make sense? Apparently it's a difference in the muscles in the neck where they're longer on one side than the other so they favour lying with their head to one side. Mercedes didn' t have it tho.

well you failed then cause it sounded very nasty!

plunket bashing has gone onfor years, and as someone pointed out they are there for support, not to dictate to you...so if you dont like the one you have dont use them again.

re the flat head thing, if you are worried see the doc... or you could try doing a google search for flat head remedies and see if there is anything you can do at home...

yep I check that for too. I havent come across any yet but basically a tight neck muscle in an infant which needs treatment.

For the record, I think our Plunket Nurse did a great job overall and she was probably just having a bad day (so was I) when she said that to me, so perhaps I read more into her tone than I should have. I mean when it comes down to it of course preventing SIDS is more important than preventing a flat head. I wouldn't want to be a Plunket Nurse with the current baby boom, they seem to be so busy all the time...

Will book in for a visit to the GP soon and see what they say. Thanks for all your comments everyone  .

Huge baby boom all right Kakapo. I had 26 newborn babies for the month of july, 19 for june and this month I have already got 7 referrals sitting on my desk including a set of twins, so this is going to be another busy month.

Best of luck at the GP
