Topic: Evacuation Question. Posted: 31 July 2008 at 4:25pm |
Apparently Kaiapoi was going to be evacuated today before hightide but then they decided it wasn't necessary, I was totally unaware of any of this.
But now am wondering as it may happen tomorrow at high tide as the river through town is a risk of breaking its banks, what happens about pets? Do you take them with you as well? Do they have somewhere they evacuate people to or do you just have to sort yourself out?

I think there's usually a designated hall or community centre. Civil Defence usually runs the evacuation, if my memory is correct. I'm not sure about pets though. The last page in the yellow pages has alot of info.

Hi cuppatea. We went over the Kaiapoi river today on our way home to Rangiora and I have never seen it so high! Hope you don't have to evacuate.
I am pretty sure that you will usually be evacuated to a certain place usually a town hall or school. Could be any of the primary schools or maybe Kaiapoi High School? I am not sure about pets but I think they stay behind. I have heard in a flood of putting your cat in the roof space with enough food for a few days but not sure about dogs or other animals. The inside back page of the yellow pages is all the civil defence info about evacuation. I would put any of your passports/ insurance docs/ marriage certificates etc in a water safe bag and make sure you take them with you. I would pack some stuff so you are ready to go. The high tide has been now so I hope that it will help the water level to drop.
Fingers crossed you can stay where you are it's terrible out there.

Me!! and it is only Amberly beach. We are nice and dry. Our pond is very full but not overflowing (yet). One house on our street has flooded but it was in a culvert next to a stream.
Marissa, check out www.waimakariri.govt.nz They have info on what to do if evacuated. They seem to have the best info of any of the sites I have been looking at.
I am meant to be going to a flash dinner tonight but I am wondering if I am silly to go even though I know I can get through by going via Rangiora. Couldnt get out atall this morning so couldnt get to work....bummer!

I thought it was you Nikki but couldn't quite remember and didn't want to put the wrong name.
Personally I wouldn't risk going out.

Our back lawn was under 3 inches of water this morning and the driveway was flooded but the majority of it has drained away now.
Just feeding Spencer but will check that site out and pack some bits tonight just in case.
Totally forgot about the info being in the yellow pages...DUH. Hope I can take pets with me, I would be extremely reluctant to leave my fur babies behind.

Take your pets with you if you can.
I know there were a few fur casualties when the Manawatu flooded in 2004, I'd hate to lose my cat.
