Ok, so I am sure someone's hubby had these not too long ago?

I am nearly completely sure that mike has them. Started over a week ago after he'd had a nasty cold/flu, he then got really tired and poor appetite, then one side of his face swelled up in the glands under his jaw and continued into the glands around in front of his ear, he has been in heaps of pain with them. He went off to the docs (by himself) and came back with antibiotics and some pain relief - doc apparently looked for like 2 seconds, checked his ear on that side as said there was fluid in it, so gave the antis and that was it. didn't say anything about mumps but then mike didn't ask either.

So, after 4 days of antibiotics, I am still seriously convinced that it's mumps, because the original side has come down a fair amount but the other side has now progressed up to being large and sore again.    Now as you can imagine - to most people mike just looks kinda normal size again as he's usually very skinny in the face, but to me i can see how darn huge it's gotten.

Anyway, do we go back? i mean there's nothing we can do about it anyway if it is mumps is there?

Opinions - does it look like mumps? I can't think where he could have gotten it from?

I had the mumps in the first few weeks of my pregnancy (actually it was TWO whole months from start till I felt 100% again) and it started off with a really sore throat that slowly got worse, then my glands on the left side (only happened on one side and I've been told that it's common to get it on one side and then on the other side at a later stage) started to get bigger and quite sore to touch, and then as time went on I suffered quite badly with lethargy and I could barely get out of bed and I slept pretty much all day and still felt really blah all the time
I even went to one doctor who told me there was nothing wrong with me.... BULL PUKKY so I went somewhere else for a 2nd opinion and it was him who told me I had the mumps and that I HAD to take time off work to recuperate.. it ended up taking so long to recover that I ended up resigning because I was getting to far along in my pregnancy to continue anyways (plus I was looking at leaving anyways, so it came at a perfect time)

If you do think it's the mumps, your DH needs to go to a doctor.. I'm not sure if they can give you anything for it (i didn't take anything) so he may just have to ride it out

I would get him back to the Dr quick smart - that looks really painful. Not to freak you out but I think I remember hearing that mumps can be more serious for men???

I had the same thing and I thought it was mumps too.. But it turned out it wasn't. I had an infection in the saliva gland in my cheek it has a big long medical name can't remember it now. But antibotics cleared it after a few days.

DH should go back to the doctor to check if it is mumps or an infection in the cheek/mouth.??

it was my DH that supposedly had the mumps a wee while ago........he didn't have any pain with his though but did have a cold/flu, which of course meant he was dying    his blood test came back negative for mumps, so he was just a swollen medical mystery freak

janine, you need to get mike back to the dr for a blood test to see if it is mumps and then you'll know for sure. if it is, it needs to be recorded on the 'infectious disease database' or something like that..........he could've got it from anywhere and probably would've been at least a week before he swelled up.

the girls should be fine if they have been immunised. we had to keep charli out of daycare for 3wks because she hadn't had her jab yet.

it's not too serious, but it can cause infertility in men.....i know that's not relevant for you, but i think that's what jaycee might have been thinking of

hope mike's better really soon!!!

Hehe infertility *giggles*

Janine why don't you give the nurse at the dr's office a call and say, hey it doesn't seem to be responding to the AB's is it worth doing any more about it or does it need to be left to its own resources?

I thought mumps is when your neck is very swollen not the face as my brother had years ago.
