Topic: 2 questions Posted: 17 May 2006 at 3:01pm |
Hey all,
I have 2 questions that i hope someone can answer lol
first of all Rhiannon is always getting the hiccups, is this harmful for her, and why does she get them?
second well third questions as the first one was a double banger..hahaha
how do i know if the formula i am using is giving her an upset stomach (she has bowel movements once or twice a day, and 1 out of 3 feeds she will throw up some of it, more out of gutsing i think).
thanks

Hey Kaz. I was always told hiccups dont hurt the baby. I could get them to go away with my girls by giving them a tiny bit of boiled water.
Re the formula. If she doesnt seem in any pain ie screaming bringing knees up to chest, General unhappiness then it probably isnt affecting her. Also sometimes the colour of poos can mean an upset tummy (greenish). But then green poo can be normal for some babies. Re spilling most babies spill to some degree till they are around 3 months old when their brain learns to control the sphincter muscle.

First (and second). I think it is normal to get Hiccups. They say it means that she is growing and her stomach is adjusting (could be an old wives tale). Zaara gets loads when she laughs alot and occationally just like that. She is a very happy baby so I doubt that the hiccups is harmful.
Third. Dont know about formula, but Zaara did Poos three to four times at that stage too...And you will find that it will change and there will be no Poos for Days.....I dont think you need to worry. If her poo does not smell funny then she does not have an upset stomach. Please dont quote me on that...I could be wrong. But lots of poos is common!
Hope this helps

as far as the Hiccups go they are very normal Alan got them all the time when I was preggy with him. and still at 15month's get's then quite often.
Now as far as the formula goes as the other ladies have said unless she seem's to be in any discomfortant then she is probaly fine. I had a wee bit of trouble finding the right one for Alan they recommend not to change too often, but if you are not happy then you can try and ring some of the companies and ask for sample's to try, but deffently if she is happy and sleeping well then she is totally fine, but if you become worried ring the midwife or your well child provider.

Hiya Kaz,
Hiccups - all cool - Andrew used to lie in his bassinet amusing himself with the hics and ups when he was little
Poos and formula - formula feed babies have different bowel motions than breastfeed babies - they smell and look different and tend to be more regular. They need to have at least one bowel motion a day as formula can block them up a little (I learnt this with Andrew) whereas breastfed kiddies can hold on that bit longer, store it up and then let rip (I learnt this with Sean). Just check that the consistency is not rock like and that Rhiannon isn't straining too much to get it out - you can supplement her with a little cooled boiled water between feeds if necessary- also feel free to talk poo with your midwife or GP. Throwing some up is pretty normal too - just don't wear too many dark coloured shirts or have a cloth nearby on your shoulder and you'll be fine (the smell of slightly rancid baby milk is a badge of honour for new mums). Provided she's gaining weight (which it sounds like she is doing a great job of - yay her!) you're fine.

with the whole poo thing, not to contradict anyone but Kobe was formula fed from day one and could go days without doing one but as long as its no longer than about 3-5 days its fine. My friend whos baby was born just a week later was b/f from day one and man did she poo!!!! Spilling is really normal, its only projectile vomiting you need to watch, not worry about for a start but watch. Which formula did you go with?

i went with nutura gold starter, it was the first one we tried in sachet form and she took to it, so thats what we went with.
she only projectile vomits when she has drunk too much too quickly, so im not worried about that.
thanks to everyone for putting our minds to rest
