Topic: Campervan holiday up North... Posted: 25 May 2008 at 11:39am |
I have booked a campervan for 6 days in July for DH and I to take our final trip together pre-baby.
We're flying into Auckland and picking up a campervan (with toilet and shower, thank goodness!) and thinking of driving up Northland (as I haven't been there since I was 10!)
Any suggestions on places to visit, stay in the camper etc?
Also, we'll be spending 3 nights at the end of the trip in Auckland - any suggestions on nice hotels to stay? I'm thinking central city so we can use public transport to go places (and shopping for baby!!!)

I would suggest the Bay of Islands for up North.
Regarding the Auckland hotel, I love the Langham. We stayed their on our wedding night 4yrs ago and have managed to spend 2 anniversaries there as well. It can be pricey though. Check out wotif , they often have some great deals.
Have a wonderful time, and drive safe!

Orewa has a really good camping ground.
Mangawhai and Ruakaka, Omaha, Leigh, Fully recommend Matakana.
Citywise; how flash are you wanting to go? Theres Sky City, Heritage, Stamford Plaza, Hilton... If you don't want so flash you could look at places in Newmarket, In Greenlane/Ellerslie there is the Ibis.

If its your thing going to Waitangi and have a look around up there. I would so love to do that as I am related to one of the chiefs that signed the treaty.

cool, thanks for the suggestions so far.
We may even venture south of Auckland too, I was thinking of heading to Tauranga? What is there to do/see along the way?

If you go up Northland you may not have time to get to Tauranga too - well, you could but it would mean a heck of a lot of driving and not much stopping to smell the roses so to speak!
I loved Russell when I was a kid (had two family holidays there) - heaps to see if you're into historical stuff. I can't remember exactly where it is but I know next time I'm up far north I want to go see the massive Kauri, Tane Mahuta - you can use that idea if you want!

The Langham is nice, I went to a conference there recently, and the Sky City Grand.
