Topic: I want a job. Posted: 27 March 2009 at 2:49pm |
This is gona be long I feel.
I was working at Subway when I got pregnant with Ryan. At the time I was looking for another job, but decided there was no point as I was pregnant. So I resigned form there with no intention of goin back. Before that I had walked out of my position (in retail) coz the boss was a b!tch and before that I was at another Subway. That's how I managed to get another spot so easily.
I loved the flexabilty of it, but I hated it. 5am starts, I came home stinking and it not really something I want my son to be telling his friends at child care, IYKWIM. No affence to anyone.
We are managing to live, just. We have no savings and when we get a surprise bill, DH has to go running to the IL's.
I really want to start working again but I don't know where to start. I didn't do the best in school all I have is a Certificate in Media Arts from WIntec and a couple of fast food references.
I'm not even sure what I want to do.
So many dreams but no where to put them.

Sarah - have you looked into if you are entitled to any financial help to study? I know for one of my friends, she actually earnt money while studying due to her hubby's income and the fact they had a child. The incentives these days for that sort of thing are rather generous.
If I was you, I would figure out what your dream job/career is, and work from there. Even if you can work part time and study part time towards what you want to do, it would probably be better.
And remember Ryan's only 8 months old, he won't be able to talk for a while so until then you can do whatever job pays the bills
I work part time in a crappy job that pays about $10-15 an hour less than what I can earn teaching (what I'm qualified for). But paying the bills and having flexible hours atm is more important I guess

Oh yeah .. and I wouldnt mention you walked out because so and so was a biatch on any future interview
In todays economic climate, I would think that studying towards something would probably be your best bet. Hopefully your DH doesnt earn too much money and you might get some help from the government.
Unfortunately my DH doesnt get any help .. but its a sacrifice we are willing to make for the future of our family (as a happy Daddy is a good Daddy)
Also studying is great as you can usually work it so that you dont have to put your kids into care ..

I've looked at studying. but I always get put off coz there's already heaps of people doing that specific thing and there wouldn't be many jobs around. I decided at the biginning the year I'd like to do secondary teaching, my little brother (who is in 7th form) said I wouldn't be able to controll the kids these days. Polite I know. But I think the way we can get control of them is in school. I hated school.

What about a cafe job that you can do part-time over lunch hours particularly? Probably tables or tills.

Bless .. well we are going through a baby boom .. so teachers are ALWAYS going to be in demand .. so I wouldnt worry.
DH has started doing his ECE degree .. and although the actual studying part has shocked him he seems to be getting into the swing of things now.
You should definately look into it .. and teachnz has quite a lot of information on scholorships you may be able to apply for.

I agree with the studying idea as you'll probably never get a better opportunity to do it. In saying that I know of two, young, secondary school trainee graduates who've had trouble getting positions which really surprises me.
Totally agree with Emz's advice - if it's about paying the bills any job will do and something you can do in the early morning or evenings may mean your DH can look after Ryan, saving on childcare costs.
Supermarket work
Merchandising
Call Centre
Research telemarketing (can be done from home)
Cafe Work
Bar Work
Commercial Cleaning
Delivering pamphlets
Good luck with finding something that fits your lifestyle and plans.

Bank call centres are open all hours too .. so you can usually pick up "off" hours there.

seconadry teaching is great! I love it! and you LEARN how to control the kids - so don't worry about that. I had a degree so only had to do a one year tthing, but a four year wouldn't be too different perhaps (well, apart from three more years). one thing that is an issue, was placements - trying to get a sitter for those four-six weeks was tough at times.
don't know where you are based, but massey was VERY kid friendly. a heap of people had babies while there and brought them to classes.
i studied extramurally (at home) so that might be an option.
while I did that, i worked part time at Pak N save. I LOVED it. I chatted to people, and treated packing a trolley like playing tetris. had a ball and thpose jobs where you don't have to think, or do anything outside working hours are great when you have a young family.

Thanks ladies. I was having a wee looksie at the uni here and Wintec. It's 4 years to be a teacher. And 3 to be a MW but I don't have the qualifications for that. I'll keep searching.

Hi Sarah,
Things may have changed but when I did my degree it was 3 years for a bachelor of teaching (primary) and you will be surprised at how fast that goes. I know you said you would like to do secondary but you could use the primary degree as a stepping stone. Then you are only out of the work force for 3yrs, you can work in primary, earn some $$ and gain experience while you do the 1yr diploma to be able to teach secondary. Your cert in media arts might be transferrable to the tch qual, you should ring them and see.
You would be able to put Ryan in the campus creche while you go to class and lectures, it would be so easy to drop him in and out of DC and if you have a busy day you can always pop in to visit him in btw classes. I had people in my T-group who had babies in the creche and used to go off to bf and then come back.
I just think that if that is what you really want to be doing then just go for it. you don't want to look back later on and have regrets.

Are you meaning qualifications for teaching or MW? I know that at uni you can do 1 year courses if you don't have the right qualifications then this can help you get into the degree the following year.
I trained 9 years ago at Waikato (teaching) and it was only a 3 year degree. That's a pain they've changed it back to 4 years (but I can kind of understand cause there's heaps to learn)

I loved my secondary teaching and miss it but I will go back once the kids are a little older. In the mean time I have no trouble picking up relief work which pays quite well and means no marking and paperwork!
All the best with finding your 'place'.
