We're in New Plymouth for the week and don't really know the area. We stayed in a campground for one night a couple of years ago and that was it.

Can any NP people recommend some nice restaurants, cafes or pubs to check out.

Anything else that is worth exploring while we are down here.

We are staying on the corner of Leach and Cameron Street.

Hey AF!
I'm from New Plymouth :) I *just* wrote out a list of stuff to do in the area for someone else so you are lucky!
New Plymouth
Coastal Walkway (you can hire peddle cars to mini drive)
Aquatic Centre
Lee Break water walk
Climb Paritutu
Farmers Markets Sunda 9-12pm
Govett Brewster Art Gallery
Brooklands Free Zoo and Gardens
Pukekura Park and the Festival of the Lights
Pouakai Zoo
Pukeariki Museum
Round the Mountain Drive

Inglewood
Fun Ho! Toy Museum
Pioneer Village

South Taranaki
Tawhiti Museum
Dairy Land
Wool and Fur shops

Oakura and around the coast
Surf Highway 45
Stoney River Cafe and Walk
Lots of little craft and junk shops out this way
Okurukuru Cafe and Winery

Waitara ways
Sentry Hill Winery
Wairau (sp?) Winery
White Cliffs Brewery
Lots of PYO fruit and vege places

There are some great little places to eat in town: Breakers, Marbles (seafood buffet), Cobb n Co, Sunworld (cheap and nasty but tasty asian food buffet), Burger Wisconsen, Burger Fuel, Crowded House (which is a bar), Zanzibar, Marinovich's, India today.

You are right in the middle of town and they are pretty much all within a walk or 2 min drive

hey welcome, hope the weather stays good for you while you are here. Are you in Np for the Elton John concert? If so have a great night.
I can't add much more to what what Peace has already said really except Chaddy's charters is a great boat ride out around the sugarloaf islands to the seals and beyond, you will find them down at the port.
A walk around Pukekura Park is beautiful and the cafe there is very nice too, of just take your fish and chips (from either snapers by burger king, Marinovich's oppersite library or seafood on the beach down at port)...mmm, might have to do that myself tonight
Do you have toddlers? If so, there is a great indoor play place called jack and jills on Rimu St, $4.50 for under twos or $6.50 for over twos that is just the best if the weather turns sour (great coffee and cake there too). If weather good, the zoo at the top of bowl of brooklands is the bees knees.
And since the lights start on Thursday you must try and walk around Pukekura Park at night to look at those, just awesome.
Also in Peaces list is Okurukuru Cafe and Winery...love this place.
anyway, have fun!

Wow, thanks guys that's quite a list you've given me.
Yep we are down for the Elton John concert. I can't wait.

We haven't done anything today. Just getting up to no good and wrestling over the computer. We'll go out for dinner later maybe but tomorrow we'll definitely go out exploring.
