Topic: Position for car seat - where is yours? Posted: 22 August 2006 at 2:03pm |
Ok so I've been fitting our car seat today (we're not using a capsule.) I'm sure hubby will kill me once he finds out I've been lugging a car seat down stairs and all around but....
What I'm wondering is, I've read the best position is in the middle of the back seat but then many people seem to have it on one side (certainly seems easier for getting bubs in and out!). We have 3 anchor points so no problems there.
Where do people have thier car seats positioned?

Mine is on back passenger seat. I heard it was safest to have middle... but I can't get the lap belt done up tight enough to hold the seat sturdy!!!

Ours is behind the passenger seat, but ours is a capsule and uses the seatbelt as the anchor system.

Capsule we had in the front and behind the passenger. When it was just one of us driving Andrew got to ride up front. When he moved to his big seat it was in the back and behind the passenger seat. He will move to behind the drivers seat when the next one comes along I think - still to work it out.

When it was just Kiya, I had her carseat in the middle... when Josiah moved out of the capsule into a rear/forward carseat he was behind the passenger seat, as Kiya was in a booster seat behind the driver.
Now, we have a 7-seater people mover... Josiah is in the middle row behind the driver, and at the moment Kiya is in the middle row behind the passenger. She's out of her booster seat, but we use a SafeFit for her at the moment... once Xavier is born, he'll go behind the passenger, and Kiya can pick a seat in the back.

We don't have a capsule either, and the carseat is in the middle - the anchor point is behind that, so it's the only place to have it.
It's actually quite good having it in the middle as you can climb into the car as well - great on a rainy day!

we have our carseat behind the passenger seat. we don't have an anchor point in the middle and i think it would make it pretty hard to get bubs in and out.

Hmmmmmmm I'd really rather have it on the passenger side but if we have a middle anchor point I wonder if I should there...at least the strap to the anchor point can be released to get baby in and out....my goodness I sound like a lazy mum to be!! It just seems like it could be a mission getting bubs in and out!

When I had just Alex I put behind the passenger seat. At first I found it too hard with my c-section scar to get in the back if he was in the middle & then I just couldn't be botheed changing it around. Now I have Alex behind the driver's seat & Blaire behind the passenger seat.

A friend of mine suffered back problems during and after her pregnancy and has the baby seat in the middle - reckons it's easier for getting bubs in and out as she can sit down rather than bend over.

well I think we've solved the problem...we've discovered that if we put it in the middle B can't drive the car because he can't put the seat back far enough to accomodate his tall self!
So behind the passenger seat it will have to remain.
Thanks for the advice though!

Ours is behind the passenger seat - it's a 7 seater people mover, so the only way he could be in the middle was if he was in the very back of the car and we wouldn't be able to get him in and out.
Plunket regularly run free carseat fitting sessions where they have an expert who can ensure that the seat is fitted properly. Give you local a ring or I'll keep an eye out for the next one at my plunket if you like.

Maya is behing the passenger seat, in Mum's car the anchor is in the middle and when she was rearfacing I found the anchor strap got in the way of putting her in and out and was a pain in the a**.
When the twins get here I'll have one baby on each side and Maya in the middle as she can do up her own straps so I don't have to lean over.

At antenatal classes, they had the seatbelt speaker come in and give us a demo and a chat (the only part I really listened to). The best place for a car seat is in the back seat of the middle of the car, although this can be a problem with some seatbelts. The next best place to have it is on the back passenger seat because you get bubbah out of that side of the car which is the side that is closest to the pavement, this is also a good practice for them to get into when they get older!
