My2angels - there are always exceptions, and I would never think that Kobe was kob! Strictly following phonetic rules, I could see people trying to say it as rhyming with lobe - but to think of it as rhyming with bob totally ignores the moderating e!!!!

I would like a job as name veoter as well. My "personal" opinion is that a child with an unusual name feels presure to "conform" to being unusual. I personally think stupid made up names and spellings pidgeon hole kids. After all, how many lawyers do you know or doctors or whatever are called d'Stineeyy- Mystyke? Also, kids are really mean to anyone who is different, and I would personally hate to think of my baby getting picked on because I had given him or her some god awful made up name. RANT RANT My best mate at high school had a really unusual name, and when she came over to visit me from Oz just before I had fatty (yes, I do call him that in public)she literally begged me not to name my baby anything different or weirdly spelt. She has spent her whole life telling people how to pronounce and spell her name, and how her parents made it up and why, and opn top of that. Her last name is a "common" one, but is spelt diffferently as well... Poor thing!

hey, there IS a veto on some names in NZ. You can't name a child with certain words that are also titles, or use very obscene words... Sir, Justice, Mrs, and swear-words are out, and even Al Quaida (dunno if I spelt that right) are all out as far as NZ Births, Deaths and Marriages are concerned. No vetoes on names that just are dumb though - they have to be pretty out there to be told no. In my career I've come across a ton of bad, bad names (so many of which I'd love to share just for a giggle, but alas I can't)! And they're all ones that got through - eeek!
A Palmy newspaper had a different list for top NZ names in 2006 (how they can be so different in the one country, I just don't know! Media, eh). Ella topped the girls names, and Grace was reported to be the most popular middle name. I knew we were going for a name a lot of others had chosen, but didn't expect that!! Ah well, I've had a best bud for years with the same name as me and it's never bothered me at all.

*sigh* I totally understand the spelling thing. I always seem to have to spell my name (Selina), and now kinda wish I'd kept my maiden name as it was common as muck and no spelling needed. However I now have to spell my first name, surname and street name ... blah.
Sorry a bit OT, but just putting in my 2 cents worth from previous posts.

At least yours is spelt Selina and not.... SCLENA!!!!
I asked the girl if she was from an eastern european country, but no, apparetly the SC are as in science, then you have a syllable break before the Lena part. 3 consonants like that together always naturally run into a blend, so she must get fed up being called Sclena that rhymes with Cleaner!

Apparently there was a case some years back in America where two twins sued their parents for their names: Lemon Peel and Orange Peel. Now THAT is dumb!!!!

I had heard that NZ had a veto for names as well. I had heard that Hitler and Suddam are on it probably Osama as well. I tried to google it but couldn't find anything.

Jacobsmama - Ann(e) is fine...in fact that is our bubs third name - specifically requested by Dhs grandad to honour his daughter who passed on and his grandma or someone (must check to clarify that one!) - and have asked DH to double check on spelling before she arrives so we can get it right...his grandad is stoked!!!

So that's where the rock n' roll came from... you rebelled against your name! That'll serve your parents right! (Don't tell you mum I said that, I quite liked her.)

yeah man, especailyl at the height of the "I hate my name" buzz when I was 14... I was going to go to LA and live with my aunty, become a stripper and get discovered by a rock video maker, get put in a poison or motley crue video, marry Bret Michaels or Vince Neil, and live happily ever after. Got no idea what I would have changed my name to though...

Ive always hated my name, I got so much crap at school and my middle name is horrible to now so is my last name. I have to spell my first (is that with an I or a Y?) and my last name and my street. I live in Kruse Pl, why not just spell it as it sounds Cruise Pl but no so i always have to spend ages giving my details.

Ann, I am Anne Louise (does wees). I hated having such a "plain" name, when everyone else in my class at school was Louise, Nicola/Nicole or Karen. Still, I have a stinker of a last name...
