I wouldnt worry to much Vanessa. My plunket nurse thought Kobe had one to so the doctor referred him just incase but it was sweet. I think they just like to check them out because if they do have one then its easily fixed while they are little.

I had a friend during uni with lazy eyes, or ambylopia (sp?) as the medical term puts it... and he could see just fine, didn't affect anything for him really - not even driving etc.

And when I'm really REALLY super tired or stressed I get a lazy eye on my left... just happens, and my eyesight is fine too.

I had a really bad one as a child and had to have surgery to correct it. One thing mum and dad did to me was to cover up the good eye to make the lazy one work harder. They were told to do that by the eye specialist so maybe you could try that if he will let you patch his eye - make a game out of it and play pirates.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Yea if it goes any further, I think the next stage is an eye patch. Becks' idea of playing pirates is a good one because the kids otherwise try to pick at the cover.

my oldest had a lazy eye and we had it checked out several times by the eye doc up at the hospital. it took lots of asking plunket and doctor though (grr) we missed her last appointment and we never got givcen another one but so far it appears to of fixed itself. a friend of ours daughter had to wear a patch for a while to fix hers.
but just keep an eye on it and push for the appointment to be moved forward if you do have any concerns...

I have a lazy eye and have had 5 op's to try and fix it. My sight is affected as I can only use one eye at a time, but since that is all I've even known, it's not really a big deal. BUT, of course I was very aware when my DD was born so looked into it heaps. You can do exersises with your baby very easily to strenghten the eyes. The best one is to have jack follow an object with his eyes from side to side, up & down etc without moving his head...not the easiest thing with a baby but a toddler will think it's a great game, I used to hold Cailin's head while DH would move something back and forth. We started this when she was about 2-3 months old I think. If you notice that one eye isnt' following as well as the other, cover the good eye with your hand about 50% of the time while you are doing the exersises and this will help strengthen the muscles. I think it is recommended to do this about 1-2 time times daily for about 5mins.
Oh, and I also have read that as long as it is sorted by around 5-6 years old, there shouldn't be any sight problems like I have

Depending on age some correct themselves, we were told not to worry until after 6months, however Micheal's did not go away so we tried patching for a year and then glasses. None of these worked and when he was three he had an operation to correct both eyes as one was severe and the other mild. It's a quick operation and it's only day surgery and he wasn't in any painafterwards. We were told at the time they patch to try and force the child to use there lazy eye as for some and only some not all they can lose a little vision in the lazy eye once again depending on the severity.
